Widows' without Phenolic?????
« on: November 23, 2008, 09:55:00 AM »
Looking for pictures of widows without phenolic in them. Planning on ordering a new one and I think I want to drop the phenolic from it but want to see some examples first.

Tell the woods as well.

Thanks

D

That's the only way I'd order one myself.   When you order one without the phenolic they remove the P from the front of the name.  I just recieved a 56" SAX cocobolo and kingwood.  Will put some pictures up when I get some time....hunting full time the next few days, so give me a bit.

Okay, so I am new to this.  What exactly is phenolic? Why is it used?  Why would you decide you want it included in your riser or not? Thanks.   ;)

It's a wood fibre/resin mixture they block out and use as laminates.  Widow uses it in their takedown limb butts to eliminate problems from mosture getting into the pin holes.   If my bows get wet, I'll just take them apart and let them dry.  Never cared for the black phenolic myself.

Thanks, Mike.  I've seen risers on the Morrison site, for instance, made completely of phenolic.  What would be the advantage/disadvantage?

I ordered a Solid Phenolic Riser from Bob and the main reason I ordered that over wood was because of the added mass weight in the riser.

Phenolic is the same stuff that printed circuit boards are made of. The best reason for using it in as a lamination is it's very tough, virtually non breakable. a layer of phenolic in a riser prety much assures it won't break in half.

Here are a couple pics of my Precision SAX cocobolo without he phenolic. I like it for the looks and it is not as heavy.

Lechewe,

I just cannot believe how much effort you are going to put into this...

Have them build you a standard plywood one and then get it camo dipped...you already have a pretty one; you need a BEATER!

Careful with the blaspheme, the cult will be knocking on your door.    :saywhat:

The one I have is the beater now I need a pretty one. Just look at the one above and tell me that ain't sexy. Heck, it's probably even cheaper than a tricked out ebony "Tip"    :biglaugh:

Besides everyone knows your a closet Widow lover and this way there will be one around without you having to admit to owning one. At least until you realize the superiority but we'll worry about that soon enough.    ;)

Thanks

Thanks

I won't ruin this for Lechwe, but when you guys see what he is getting, it will BLOW you away.  One of my friends (Lefty Fred here on TG) does some of the exotic woods for BW.  We got special dispensation to go to the shop and pick Darrell's riser and limb pieces.  Mike has some incredible pieces of wood in his shop.  If you are looking for wood to build your new Widow, or any other bow for that matter I would PM him, or check out his website  www.rosewoodarchery.com

And yes, I  am a closet Widow lover...I do love the way they look, but they just don't shoot for me.

I would not give up the phenolic for anything.  A buddy and I shoot the same arrow out of the same bow at the same weight and draw length and my bow is faster than his and he does not have the phenolic.  I know speed is not everything but it helps.  I also don't know if its the phenolic or not.  Also, with the little added extra weight the bow is very shock free.  I have shot widows since the early 90's and the new ones with the phenolic are the best yet.  Just my two cents...
