Broadhead planing question

I have never tuned up my bow. I have ordered some new arrows and am ready to give it a go. It seems pretty straight forward. The question I have is when doing broadhead planing. It is suggested that you get the largest SAME weight broadhead you can. This is to put bigger wings on the front to get that last bit of minute tuning done. I was wondering if trimming the fletching feathers would be the same thing. I know you wouldn't want to get close to shooting an unfletched broadhead arrow. But what if you took off 1/4 inch of feather height, then tuned to that and then maybe 1/2 inch? Would this work? What do you think?

Greg, If you are going to shoot narrow BH's and don't want to buy wide ones just for tuning, yes, you could use smaller size with the narrower heads. I'd drop down to 3" or even 2". Get your tuning done then refletch to the size you want to shoot. Keep your "normal" size on the fletched field tips however. Another option is wet the feathers so they matt down on 2 or 3 of your BH's and shoot them that way....O.L.
