best way to cut carbons w/o arrow saw?
« on: November 26, 2008, 09:59:00 AM »
Without having to invest in a cutoff saw, what's the best way to cut down carbon arrows? I recently got some CE 250s and I want to experiment without making a big investment. Is it possible?

I use my dremel tool in a little jig I made for it. Works great for me no more than I do. Heck I use my dremel tool for lots of stuff. Just be sure to use some dust control or do it outside.

I've done it with a dremel tool,if you make a jig and make it where you can move the shaft into the dremel and be able to rotate the arrow shaft as you cut,it will give you a good square cut.

I got a saw from harbor freight- mini cut off saw.  $25.  Works great.  Mounted it on a board with guide and ruler.

Would a pipe cutter like you would use on copper work, or would it just crush the fibers?

Pipe Cutter will just ruin your shafts. Why not take them to a local archery shop and pay them couple bucks to cut them for you the right way.

I need to build a jig for my Dremel - should work just fine.

My local is a great option for me - if I can get away from work to do it on Tuesday-Friday, or if I have time on Saturdays.  Otherwise, I'm on my own.  I'd rather have the option to do it myself.

I figured that. As far as going to the local shop, it's 15 miles away and if I understand people right around here you sometimes need to trim 1/4 inch at a time to get them tuned right. That could get expensive gas wise.  :)

I just use a metal cutting disc in a 5" angle grinder. It's worked perfectly so far.

My buddy and I use a miter saw with a 60 tooth blade, just go real slow. Cuts nice and clean.

Have a friend with a metal cutting chopbox?  That works as well as the Dremmel for me.

if you have a table saw or power miter saw, a metal cutting blade works great. They are pretty inexpensive, especially compared to an arrow saw.

Ihave a board with a yardstick screwed to it, and a small nail 1/2 inch from the beginning for my nock to snapp on. Once I know what my arrow length, or my  buddy's needs to be, I put an arrow on the board, mark with a white paint marker, set aside to dry for a couple of minutes and keep on till all are marked. Then I put an oversize cutoff wheel and shank that I buy at the local flea market for$2 in my dremel, clamp teh dremel in my bench vise, turn on, hold shaft level, push paint line through the blade, smooth as silk. Cheap easy, works great, have made about 10 dozen this year for me and friends.

I use a regular bench grinder for sharpening tools. I turn the arrows at 45 degrees and come in just below the length I want to cut and grind right through as I trun them. Then I square the ends on the side of the wheel. It works great. jwingman

wingman,

The heat generated by using a grinder cannot be good for carbon shafts, I would advise against doing so for safety.
