I never had a problem with my Martin Hunter, except that I was brand-new to traditional archery, and I had no-idea about brace height, nor had I any idea about string-stretch. My first traditional bowkill is in my avatar, a feral donkey taken with my Martin Hunter, and the brace height is about six inches, I'd say. There was a bit of pain before I realised I could change it!
But, that's probably not your problem, re-reading your post. If you can't hold onto it properly, you might be able to either get the grip modified or make yourself a leather bow sling, like what the Olympic archers use.
Good luck, as it is a good bow, the Martin Hunter.
