Good luck with that, I'm from Johson County and my gosh have leases gotten expensive there.  I don't know if you're familiar with that area or not, but there's alot of Shawnee Nat'l Forest there.  I'm well familiar with that particular area and wouldn't hesitate to hunt on it.

Also, something else to consider, I think all bow permits are draw only now.  It'd be a bummer to pay for a lease and then not get a tag.  (I may be wrong about that, I don't keep up with it anymore since the price for out of state is highest in the nation).

Hi...Thank you for your Interest.....I am familiar with southern Illinois...I am actually from east central Illinois...I lived there for 33 years...I have bowhunted public ground in Illinois and had several problems with allot of hunting pressure....with the amount of public ground in Illinois I know that a bowhunter could find some good areas to bowhunt but you would have to know the area(s) very well...that is why we are looking for a small lease where we could have a private place to bowhunt and get to know the area and the people who live there....also Illinois is a draw for bow tags/license...they have never sold out of their alloted number of non-resident tags available yet....as far as I know!....Thanks Again >>>----->

I don't know how familiar you are with southwestern Illinois, but I know a corner of the Shawnee with nearly a thousand acres of great whitetail habitate and you won't see another hunter.  You can drive right to it.  Great camp spot, lovely view.

Of course, it's all hills and ridges and difficult terrain...but you'll have most of it to yourself.  Some mighty big bucks have come off it too.  It's called Fountain Bluff and it's located just north of Grand Tower on Route 3 along the Mississippi.

As an added bonus, I saw a wild pig on top a few years ago.

Hi Dan....Thank you very much for the info....I am not very familiar with SW Illinois....more so the south eastern part...My son and I are going up this coming spring before the leaves are back on the trees and spend several days scouting and marking spots/areas on our GPS...we will be sure to spend at least a full day at Fountain Bluff...I have one of the Illinois Atlas & Gazetteer's and looked at the Fountain Bluff area....it definetly looks "GOOD"!!!!...Thanks Again for your help!!

Drive to the very top.  Be careful as the road is somewhat challenging.  You can camp at the top and walk the ridge lines from there.  Lots of good sign.  There's a main trail leading from the top going mostly north.  Follow it almost to the end and you'll see a lot of large ridge lines on either side that make great hunting.

Print a google earth map of the terrain and you get a good idea of what I'm talking about.  It's difficult, but it's lovely!!!

Besides the terrain, another problem is the fact that deer densities are less than you will find on a farm.  More area to cover for the deer you see.  But they're there and some of them are mighty big coz no one hunts them much.

If you hunt the early part of the season before gun season, there's a really nice camp ground in Grand Tower right on the Mississippi banks. At night, the barges come through and sound their horns from time to time.  Good folks camp there.  Friendly people.

Email me if you want additional info.

Hey Rocky, I've got quite a bit of experience hunting in that part of the state, since I went to college at Southern Illinois University.  I've hunted both public and private ground down there, and can tell you this.  The shawnee national forest is big and harbors some big deer.  There are so many places out there where you will never run into another hunter that I normally found less pressure on it than the surrounding private areas.  If you are looking for a big buck, try to stay within the counties that have better soils down there.  That part of the state is much different than the famed "golden triangle" are of western Illinois.  Go to counties that have corn an bean fields.  These areas have better soils and grow bigger bucks.

Here is a good one for you.  The last time I hunted down there, I was chasing a big buck.  During the late season I saw him 3 times in 3 days. I ended up moving my stand.  On the fourth day he walked within 20 yards of me, but he had shed his right antler!  I had to pass.  I looked for along time for that shed but never found it.  oh well.

Hi...Jon...Thanks for the info....I am from Illinois and you are right about the "Black Dirt"...about 100 years ago I got to hunt the Crab Orchard special draw shotgun hunt....not sure if they do that any more...but the guy I went with shot 160" ten pointer...I know what the potential is in southern Illinois....that is why I am trying to find a small piece to lease....get to know the area (Shawnee) and some of the local farmers too...and have a annual bowhunting experience in Southern Illinois....
