Today was the opener for the PA Gun season. So I decided to to wade in with the Orange Army with my longbow in hand. The morning started off really slow, I was tucked in a natural funnel leading to a nearby safe haven. I vowed to only shoot a good buck and I have to tell you it is sometimes hard, but with determination and alot of patience things seem to come together. Oh yeah a little luck always helps. Anyway I seen thirteen doe and yearlings before seeing any bone. The first buck was a definite shooter but he had the afterburners on, might of heard the Army laying down the lead nearby. Seemed like his kids were to follow, talking scrub city I don't think the next 4 bucks together would have scored 60 inches if they were thrown in super glue and measured together. The next buck was the biggest 4 point I have ever seen. He sported at least 20" main beams and his G2s were at least 12 inches long he was an old buck, big Roman nose and super mass both in horn and hide. I would have definitly shot him or at least shot at him but due to our antler restrictions he was not legal. Had a few more doe encounters, then at around 12 o'clock I had the buck that I harvested and a small six point chase a doe around me for about 20-30 minutes. Talk about a rush and a true delight to watch. Finally the doe gave in and slowed down a bit and walked right by my stand at about ten yards. The boys followed her like bloodhounds, giving me the shot to dream of. One short bleat was all that was needed as if on cue he stopped with near leg extended. The rest just happened as if it were meant to be. He acted as if nothing ever happened, just to walk a few short yards and give his life. As I sat there after this buck gave his last breath, I was awakened by shots in the near distant and could not help to think of all our fine service men and women who are defending our rights and freedoms, that are awakened by shots of violence and terror on a daily basis. My hat goes off to them in thanks and of total respect for what they do and what they sacrifice. Thanks to all and stay safe throughout the Holiday seasons.
I'll try and post some pics of my harvest. Thanks Big Ed
