E.F.O.C. with wood shafts ????????
«
on:
December 05, 2008, 07:28:00 AM »
I'm wayy new to the arrow building.. As in "my 1st shafts are comming in the mail.
I read about 200gr Broadheads, with 100gr inserts.. Or something similar to this..
What options does a wood shaft have for getting alot of weight up front??
There's probably a simple answer to this..
Other than, ""Toot, 'Shut-up, and sit down.""
Thanks, Toot

O.K.... I did a couple of searches on this..
It seems that melting some lead into the ferrel is an option.. My next question to this is...
Are you able to keep the weight "repeatable"??
Arrow to arrow to arrow...
Is the tapered end of the shaft "imprinting into the lead ???

there is a product out called woody weights , you might try them. I have no experience with these but they sound neat. Drew

I just received a set of woodyweights in the mail. Haven't made any arrows yet cause my arrow making stuff still hasn't arrived, but the woodyweights sure look like a great thing, and great service as well.
The reason i bought the woodyweights was to allow me to experiment with different front end weights and as an engineer myself i can't think of a better idea.

In addition to what has already been said, a 9-10-inch taper on the rear of the arrow and footing the front will increase the FOC. I've done a little experimenting with drilling a small diameter hole in the front of the shaft and inserting steel rod to add weight up front as well.

I have been messing around with point loaded wooden arrows ever since the last Ashby report. I have found they take to it well as long as you get the spine right. I have had success with the Woody Weights as well as using the aluminum adapters that convert to screw in points.

The soft lead wire, used in fly-tying, can be wrapped around the shaft, behind the broadhead and then glued.
By the way, SlowBowin, thanks for the great service.

Just remember that the more weight you put up front the weaker your spine becomes, so you have to start out with a stiffer shaft if you are planning on putting alot of weight up front.

I have not heard of woody weights. How do they compare in price to buying footed shafts?
Is there a web site?
Thanks, Tom

Thank you Marion!
M60Gunner, they have a site but are not a sponsor so I won't post a link, but they come up on Google just fine. About $10 a 6 pack I believe, pretty handy item. I started with a sample pack then ordered what worked best for my set up.

I built a jig that drills a 1/8 hole down the center of the sahft. I use it to put bamboo in the shaft to help eliminate boot top breaks. I also used steel and copper wire to weight forward per Ashby.
It also hollows out the tail end to increase FOC.
Sometimes I think we make such abeautiful thing so very complicated. Luckily I do like to experiment.
