Bart Schleyers bows
« on: December 13, 2008, 09:17:00 AM »
A member here was saying he wanted a bow like Mr. Schleyers and posted a picture with him and a very nice moose that was taken with this bow.

I would like to know more about this bow. I've read some about Mr. Schleyer at The Wensel Brothers link in the Sponsors Forum. He was a very impressive man. Someone I wish I could have met.

I would like to know of what wood he made his bow. How he made the tips, how wide it is, stuff like that.

I've posted this in the Bowyers Bench forum also.

I recall reading about one that was something like 90# and a flat bow of ash backed with sinew dfrom tiger killed critters.  I know no other details

In the Aug/Sept, Oct/Nov 2007 issues of TBM there is a two part article on Bart Schleyer with same pic of the flat bow that was pictured on here.  In the pic caption it says it was a 92# flat bow.  He is pictured with numerous flat bows in both articles.  I guess I should reread them.

Outdoor life or Field and Stream had an article about Mr. Schleyer about 3 years ago. They had a pic of a bow he was shooting. It was a very cool bow and of ancient design from what I remember. Not sure if it was the flatbow or not though. He was a very impressive man from what I have read in his pursuits and his wildlife biology studies.

Thanks all for responding. I have read pretty much the same thing.

Beachbow, that's cool. I hope they see this thread and respond.

I have spent seven hrs. working on my son's Christmas present. A bamboo backed hickory bow. At least I was told it was hickory when I bought it. It has beautiful dark streaks running through it. I think I'll make my Meare Heath out of it.

The Wensels have a good bit of information about Bart and his bow on their website.

I know the Brothers of the Bow had one of Bart's bows in their booth at the PBS banquet in Salt Lake City in 2006.  Only a couple of people were able to draw it.  I didn't even try.
Fellow Tradgangers Mike Mitten and Mark Baker knew Bart so maybe they'll see your thread and add what they can.  When I was at Mark's, we watched a home video of Bart shooting his grizzly bear.  Even on the TV it was pretty intense.  Waaaay cool!

Thanks for bringing this to the top Terry!

The article on the Wensel Brothers site in the Sponsors forum talks about Doug Theiner helping Mr. Schleyer with his first bow. I know I've seen his name before, I think in an issue of Primitive Archer. I will look through my back issues for it. It's been a few years ago but I think there was an article on a survival bow and arrows and I remember he wrote one on primitive bow fishing.

If he still has his rock shop I may be able to get in contact with him.

Thanks Eric and Kevin!

Kevin, I read that that stalk was filmed. That would be awsome to see!

BTW, I was wrong. I thought the pictures at the site showed the bows back but they only show the belly. And it looks like it was probably ash. It looks alot like the bow in Adams thread.

A couple of TradGang members provided video of Bart's grizzly hunt to post on TradGang. It was filmed on Hi8 but tapes provided appeared to be copies of copies on VHS so quality is very poor. Still classic footage.

That is the best footage of a hunt that I have ever seen! Thanks Tom for posting that link. Now I have to figure out how to save that where I can watch it anytime I want.
