Carbon arrow selction, help please.
« on: December 18, 2008, 10:18:00 PM »
Last time I attempted shooting carbons I had a terrible time getting anything to tune, so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I'm shooting a 60" Quinn Longhorn recurve, 54#@29" and using a Bear Weatherrest. Bow is cut aobut 3/16"s past center.

I like Beman ICS arrows and am thinking a 400 spine with 100 grain Brass inserts and a 125 Stinger should tune if I start full lenght and cut down as I tune.

Does this sound like a combination that should tune. Many of you have much more experience  than I. Thanks in advance.

I shoot 400s with 100 insert and 200 up front drawing 30" with a 31" arrow with bows a little heavier than that. SO you should be able to find a sweet spot so long as you start full length and work your way down.

I have draw right under 30 and shoot most of my bows about 55 lbs.  The Carbon Express 250 Heritage with the 100 grain brass inserts fly really good.  Total weight in the mid 600's.

I shoot both the ICS 400 Hunter and the CE Heritage 250 out of the same bow.  I am shooting a Kempf Kwyk Styk it is 54@28 but I draw 29" and it is about 57@29. Both with 450+ and beaver silencers but also have a 14-strand 8125 with bowhush and puppies and both work.

The arrows are cut at;
CE 30.25 and the ICS at 30.

The CE have 100g inserts and I shoot 125 stingers, phantoms, or hellrazors.

The ICS have regular Al inserts and I shoot a 100g steel adapter and 125-135 glue-on WW or Magnus I.

Note: If you have the arrows crowned or wrapped it will stiffen the arrow a bit.  I have a 9" crown on the CE and a 9" wrap on the ICS.

Kempf Trophy Hunter 58" 51@28
Kempf Kwyk Styk 58" 51@28
Kempf Kwyk Styk 58" 54@28
Kempf Trophy Hunter 58" 51@28

I shoot a Morrison Shawnee 53 lbs at 28 and draw 29.  I use a .500 with 200 grs up front and a 30 inch CE Maxima.  .400 shot stiff for me.  The problem for me with the .400 is I can get them to fly, but they don't shoot where I look.

Toby,
I use 150 grain BH's.
Just shot a buck Monday and the hit was forward a little.  Made it through the front shoulder and embedded in the backside shoulder.  I was pleased with the results.  Merry Christmas.

Go with Arrow Dynamics traditionals.  They are very spine tolerant.  Mine shot like darts full length.  Fletched them up and started shooting.
