Another question about wool clothes

With all the talk about wool hunting clothes, I was just wondering how you folks that use it take care of it. Is it machine washable or must it be drycleaned?

Bret, depends on the wool and the manufacturer.  My Filson stuff says dry clean only, but I have some shirts from L. L. Bean that are washable wool as well as pants from Cabela's that are of washable wool.  I go with whatever the laber says. Ron LaClaire says to only wash his longhunter shirts by hand and air dry or dry clean.

Soak them in cold water and Woolite.  Squeeze them out and let them dry over a rail or a chair.

i have the columbia wool stuff,not 100% wool but i like it. believe it or not i wash mine with the outside hose when i get home from the woods, just rinse the legs to get the mud off and let em air dry.unless i really stink  em up i dont wash them

I own all WOOLRICH Stuff.=pants,shirts, sweaters. I wash with woolite, delicate cycle.Hang up,air dry.

No matter what the label says(except for "Dry Clean ONLY" I wash my wool with Woolite in cold water and then rinse it with clear water and roll it in a extra large towel and for two days then lay it out flat on a new towel on the floor in a darkened room. In two more days it will be dry and wearable. I hang it in a cedar lined closet or store it loosely folded in a cedar box.
You only have to wash wool once or twice a year, depending on how often you wear it. You can use a brush to remove caked on mud and other clingy things and hang it in the open air on a clear day in the shade to remove scents.

I have Mil Surplus,Johnson,Woolrich,Columbia and Pendelton woolens.I cold machine wash all garments,then hang on a clothes racks near the woodstove.I said NEAR not on top of(Like in the same room).Speeds the drying a little to have warm air circulated around them.If it's warm outside then outside is the first place they go.

I just hang them out in the rain in the spring.

Haven't washed mine in years.  The dew, rain, snow will take care of that.  Sitting by a firepit with a smokey fire will cover up a lot of odors.

Ditto...ain't washed my SI in over 7 years.  Hang it out to air out.  Store it in a cedar chest in the off season.

I wash my wool in cold water with about three drops of unscented Dawn and rinse with cold water a couple of times. I do cheat and put my wool in the washer on spin cycle only and then lay flat to dry.
