a couple string questions ( for a newbie)

i still dont know what the differant kinds of strings are. i hear it all the time, flemish, fast-flite, d97, and b somthing or other but i dnt know what one is what. could someone post pics of differant ones.

you get different kinds of strings such as a endless loop or Flemish twist string.

then the numbers you mentioned are types of string material the standard older string is the B50 dacron string, then the fast flight, D97, TS1, 450+ are non stretch high performance strings materials.

some of the older bows are not "Fast Flight" Compatible meaning they cannot take the extra stress the high performance strings can put on the bow, so you want to make sure you are not putting some of these strings onto your old bows.

some of the new bows are built to handle these strings and can shoot many variations.

so, the 1969 bear grizzly i have that has a black string, with no twists in it is what then.
i would like to replace it with a nice black and red "twistie" string. pardon the ignorance, but i have not the faintest idea about strings.

also, the bow is a 56" bear. how long of a sting should i get? isnt it like 2"longer or 2" shorter than the bow.

the "twistie " string you speak of is a Flemish twist string.
i have no experience with Bear bows so will leave some of the experts to advise you on what to get, some will likely know exactly what you need for that particular bow

i believe the string you mentioned is called and "Double loop or endless bowstring"

I would say from your description your current string maybe a endless loop string.  If the loop holes are wrapped in serving thread and no twist in the string it's a endless loop.  Most of the older Bear bows take about a 4" shorter string, if the string on the bow you have now is at a brace height you are comfortable with, you can take the string off the bow and measure it's whole length from end of one loop to the other, and go with that length.

Do not put fast flite material strings on that bow, it won't last very long if you do.  Use B50 or B500 string material (Dacron).  For that bow also, stay away from D97, TS+, 450+, 452, 8125, fast flite, fast flite plus, excel, or anything else that says pretty much low stretch, or has HMPE written on it.

i never knew there was that much to know about strings. i guess the next thing i have to do i get someone to make me a string. any recomendations???

The topic of strings can be frustrating and confusing.  To make matters worse, everybody has their favorite style that they will claim can do what no other can.  Not only do you have different materials but different types, different numbers of strands and all the other assorted techniques and thoughts.

I'll second the suggestion of Bobby Graham (bgram).  An excellent guy to deal with and a string making whiz.  He understands these matters, like a metallurgist knows knife steels.

I use a B50 Flemish twist on my Bear and my other 3 bows as well.  B50 will stretch.  When I get a new string I leave the bow strung for 2 or 3 days to get all of the stretch out.

I use a flemish twist on all my vintaqe recurves. I don't unstring the ones I'm shooting often. Flemish strings are quieter and better for a vintage bow I believe. I don't see a big difference in performance between the flemish and continuous loop string, however.
