A bowyer mentioned that FF strings may be used on his bows, but that they tend to loose performance over time because FF are harder on the bow than dacron. What is the reality of this? Would the bow lose poundage or just the cast reflex of the limbs... This was for longbows. I would love to hear from any experienced bowyers or people shooting the same longbow for many years-any changes??

Sounds like that bowyer has observed something that no one else ever has?  :) ....O.L.

I have heard similar comments from a couple of old school bowyers; some guys are just stuck in the past. Time to deal with another bowyer!

I guess that is good news, because you would be surprised who told me that, but I will keep it to myself  :)

I'd just ask for some proof--a few test results maybe?  Some old wives tales get repeated so often that it's easy to accept them as fact, with nothing to base it on.

I've been shooting the same longbow for a dozen years or so, pulling 66@30.5", and when I scaled it recently it's still right on the money.  It's never had a dacron string on it, and it's my "go-to" bow--I use it for hunting, playing, shooting tournaments, etc.

I've heard that same basic thing several times over the years, but so far nobody has been able to offer any proof--or anything other than "well, so-and-so said it".

I have a 58" 1 pc. rec that has been strung for at least 10 years and has lost maybe 2 lbs. of draw weight. This bow has been shot hundreds of times and ended the acorn eating, doe chasing habits of several deer. 16 strand FF string. No signs of damage can be found on this bow. If you are concerned about damage to the limbs where the small ff string contacts it just add 4 or 5 10" long strands or dacron to each rope and twist them in. Just my 2 cents worth . I am not the one that did the killing I just build them.

Id like to see some sort of test.

Pretty much everyone agrees that letting a bow strung all the time has little effect on the strength over time, I have a hard time beleiveing the the difference between FF and regular string would have a bigger impact.

geez some one has to be the first to dicover something, if it is anything, you certianly dont have to take your buisness elsewhere due to that coment and you dont have to listen to him either.  shoot what you want if it happenes your gradchildren will probably be the first to know.
