Found sheds while stump shooting this morning
« on: January 02, 2009, 03:49:00 PM »
Went for some stumps shooting this morning, our deer season closed on Dec 31st,not much to do around here but to stump shoot and keeping an eye for sheds. While crossing a deer trail,I saw some blood into the trail,I back tracked for about 20 yards and found this set almost on top of each other    :) ,they probably were only a few minutes  old because it was snowing when I left home and there was barely any snow on them,
got lucky    :D

Thats awesome Longhorn!

Hey appox. How much does it cost for a Michigander to cross the bridge for moose or caribou? Any idea where I can find the info? Thanks

Too cool.  In almost 30 years of hunting, I've found exactly 1 matched set.

Otto, this is my fourth matched set,the first three went to Frank and Shell, probably this one too    :D .I stump shoot near a deer yard, lots of trails and the odds of finding sheds are good.

Way to go! The ones I find always have a skull attached to them. Find dead bucks whilie running my trap lines a lot. Always around the creeks.

Longhorn,

"While crossing a deer trail,I saw some blood into the trail......"

Are you saying the blood was from the antler bases? I did not know that.

Nice find by the way.

David, It happened to me 2 or 3 times while looking for sheds, to back track when finding blood in deer trails, and you can get lucky at times.
I don't know for sure if they all bleed when they shed (maybe someone here knows better)but I know it occur often.I don't think they bleed for long though.

As I understand it, it's about like loosing a baby tooth.  The antler gets detatched because the new one is trying to grow in underneath.  It get loose and just like a tooth, when it comes out there's usually a little blood.  I think when a deer nocks them off a tad early as opposed to them just falling off on their own there is more chance for blood.
Dave

I've come to believe that the keys to shooting well for me are good form, trusting the bow to do all the work, and having the confidence in the bow and myself to remain motionless and relaxed at release until the arrow hits the mark.

It has to do with photo period (amount of daylight) it triggers a drastic reduction in testosterone, when the testosterone gets to a certain  point a layer of cells begins to reabsorb calcium, when that layer of bone fully breaks down the wieght of the antler will cause it to fall off.  There can be blood and the pedical will take 6-10 hrs to scab over.  Stress can also make them shed early.  Friends in RI told me of many bucks killed in early Dec already dropped.  Stress due to a very bad year for  mast crops, most likely.  They are dropping here in southern MI.  I've seen them with both anlers as late a 3rd week of april.  Hope this helps.   ron
