Spring bear has now opened here in Oregon...I found a old ridge road last year that the bear used heavily...If they use it again this year I will have a good shot at taking one with my recurve..

No baiting here which makes it tougher...

3 mile hike to the top of the gated logging road...

This is it...Road goes out the top of the ridge and forks out to 2 old landings..Last year at the end of April I counted 44 piles of bear sign in a half mile along this road..That is what gave me the idea for tree standing this road..

I set up the stand at the forks..

Cleared the shooting lanes ,took several practice shots and deployed the trailcam..

Stay tuned for reports...Season is open until the end of May..For good luck I am using my Bear Kodiak and Bear razorheads...Bear for a Bear...LOL

Got back up there today...Hiked out some of the other ridge roads in my area just checking them out...Bear tracks everywhere...Going and coming on every ridge road...

That got me plenty excited...I headed out the ridge to my ladder stand and while I was seeing lots of tracks on the other roads, mine didn't have any...LOL

About a hundred yards from the stand I did see this though..

Good enough cause along side my spring bear tag I have a cougar tag keeping it company...

I got in my stand about 1:00 and settled in for the afternoon/evening hunt..

Dry run today..Lots of tracks but nothing came by...I didn't even get the longtail on the trailcam...He must have taken the upper road cause the cam is on the lower..  :banghead:    :banghead:

I have until the end of May...

Best of luck to ya. Looks like you have an excellent spot.

When I was stationed in WA I used to love hiking or mountain biking back into the gated areas.

Cool pics, thanks for taking us along.

By accident, I found a better way to carry my ladder stands in and out.  I wish I had a picture, but I nested and lashed togather all the ladder pieces with the top portion which has a curve to it.  I then flipped it so that curved portion near the seat is facing down (in other words the seat portion is facing to the ground) with the ladder portions extended out at about a 45-degree angle.  Then I simply walked through the grass, leaves, etc. and there was almost no friction whatsoever.  And it's streamlined so it could fit through spots with about 2' of clearance.  You didn't need that kind of clearance along that road, and in your case, with a road and some rocks, I'd think a simple set of tires that could be fed through the apparatus or something would make it an easier task.

Either way, nobody can say you didn't work hard to make this hunt happen.  Good luck and thanks again for sharing the pics.

Hey Bob,

I am hunting over near Mapleton..

Actually, packing the stand wasn't as bad as I thought it would be..Pretty easy really...It is worth the pack because I am uncomfortable in hang ons...I feel safer in a solid ladder stand...

  Back after them Thursday...

Found this about a hundred yards from my stand...Fresh,fresh..But then the weather turned nasty and nothing showed again...My brother was over on the next ridge and had a bobcat walk right up to him,but no bear....Waiting for better weather now...

This is the central Oregon coast range..Steep,brushy and tough to hunt...Ax men country..

I didn't sit in the tree this afternoon..Instead,I put on my felt sneaks and slipped along some ridge roads...Right now the bear are feeding the roadside grass and I was trying to catch one...Bear tracks and sign was everywhere..

The only thing I saw today was a big ol blacktail shed..

Dang Bill your killing me with the picks, It's been way to long since I have been back there. I can still smell the forest in my memories.

We hunted the Cummins Creek area and loved it. Good luck Bill and congrats on the nice shed.

Thanks guys, I guess no one else is hunting??..I thought the turkey hunters woud be posting reports by now...

Anyway here is my hunt report..

My treestand location is not producing...Last year it was the hot ridge but they just are not using it this year....Deader than heck...Other ridges in the area have lots of sign so I went off to find a new spot....

Last week I walked out a old blocked off ridge road scouting it out and there were several tracks on it...The bear have been busy out there since last week....Several new piles on the road and you could easily see where they have been grazing the roadside grass..

The tracks from last week had been rained out,but plenty of new ones to take their place..

I don't even have to move my tree stand...I plan on a stand at the top of the bank...This road is on top of the ridge and it is straight off both sides...It connects another large ridge and the bears are using to travel from one ridge to the other..

The bears have won round 1...Its time for round 2..

I tried an afternoon stand, but the wind turned on me so I went sneaking instead...

Hoping for a better wind Thursday afternoon...

Billy, Does that road turn right below ya? Looks like a great spot to spend some time in...

This is great here, but I wish you would have had this as a thread  on it's own and just keep updating it. I think more folks would see it that way. Some don't even check this thread.

Your on-going bear thread is great here, but would be even better on it's own...

Good luck Bill...really enjoy
hunting along with ya...
