What old compound risers can be converted??
« on: January 08, 2009, 10:16:00 PM »
I have access to about 30 old compounds and am curious which risers are used for converting over to recurves. The bows are new, most never shot. I know there are jennings, pse and some bear. They are from the late 70's and early 80's..I can get them very cheap but dont want to buy them unless they are useful....Roy

if any of the Bears are Black Bears then you have some great stuff to work with.

Here are some risers that are popular for conversions.I have only done the TD3.

Bear Black Bear (by far most popular) the rest are in no particular order...
Gamegetter (old compound)
Hoyt Rambo
Hoyt Spectra
Ram Hunter (Hoyt/Easton)
Hoyt Pro Vantage
Jennings Black Lightning,
Proline Typhoon,
Hoyt Gamegetter II (old compound)
Hoyt TD3

I just did an article on converting a Hoyt TD3 to ILF limbs, it is an easy task .

I've only seen the Ram/hunter converted. I have one in my basement. I killed my first deer with it so I probably wont change it. Tripper

The Rambo, Spectra, Gamegetter and Ram Hunter are just about all identical, with some having more lateral room in the sight window. I have a gamegetter and a spectra, also a blackbear. If you have a short DL the Proline Typhoon is also a consideration.

How does one go about converting an old compound to a recurve.
I have an old Proline typhoon that I ahve been wondering what to do with for about the last 25 years.

Yes, I would like to know how to convert as well. I just went and looked and I have an old Hoyt Gamegetter II. I have a short draw length, 26", think it would be ok?

Is there much difference in a "Black Bear" and a "Polar II" riser? and is the "Polar II" good "wharfing" material?
Thanks,
John

For those interested, I'd have to refere you to Bob Gordon on the other trad site. He is know as the authority on Warfs. He did mine, all three will accept ILF limbs. You can also "quarf" them, using quinn limbs, but they're not ILF. Great use for an old wheel bow if you have one.
TopGUN your game getter will work fine, but Bob thinks the Hoyts are better for longer DLs, Bears for mid-long, the Proline for short. I guess it's all in the limb pocket angle. You would have a smooth shooter for sure, I just don't know about speed/performance.
