Looking for best $ for $ "spartan" hunting bow
« on: January 11, 2009, 11:21:00 PM »
Hey guys.  In the next year I want to buy a new hunting recurve.  I know how these recommendation posts go sometime, but I am looking for the best $ for $ "spartan" hunting bow.  What I mean by spartan is, I only care about performance not beauty...not exotic woods, inlays, ect.  It can be darn oogly, but if it shoots fast and true tell me about it.  A Quinn Stallion, or Predator Hunter have caught my eye.  Any others out there? Thanks in advance.

Samick.  My mountain stalker is the dictionary picture of what you're asking for, does everything I ask of it and can still shoot better than I can make it.

Didn't break the bank either, with two sets of limbs to boot.

Honestly make a list of what you would like and then keep an eye on the classifieds. It may not be made for you by the bowyer but it will still be custom and more than likely at a great price.

I think to answer accurately, you have to advise what your ceiling price is...

Just bought a Chiron/Great Tree/Samick Volcano 58" recurve for $239.00+ shipping.  Scheduled to be delivered tomorrow, so I don't yet know what kind of bow it is...

From my experience, I'd go with the basic River's Edge Arroyo or a Quinn Stallion. You'd have a lot of bow for your $$$ with either of these choices.

Maddog and Holm-Made will give you a lot of bow for your money and keep the cash here in the states instead of Korea. In bad economic times it doesn't help any of us to increase the trade deficit.    ;)

Martin Savannah is one of the best bows out there, IMO. Not just best for the buck, but best, period. Used ones are around for not much money. Also, Chek-Mate is a good value. haven't shot Maddog Bows, but the prices are sure reasonable.

Check the classifieds, lots of good bows there for good prices.

I agree 100% with Vermonster. Chad (holmade) makes a very nice bow for the money. Something else you might consider is doing it yourself by obtaing a bow blank and customizing it for yourself by yourself. There are many nice bow blanks out there. I believe dryad has one,old mastercrafters has several, and others as well.Good luck in your endeavers

I would watch the classifieds and the sites to be unnamed.  Lots of bears and pearson's.
