what's your favourite b/head target?
« on: January 13, 2009, 08:37:00 PM »
i looking at getting a b/head target for practice. which target do you like best?

is the yellow jacket b/head target from 3rivers any good? i'm assuming that you can shoot field points into it too.

also where do you get it from if it isn't from above?

A deer is my favorite broadhead target.  Hog comes in a close second....

sorry, couldn't resist!

I need a new one too.  I destroyed my foam deer with budget open layers; too many dropped shots to the leg.  I'm thinking about getting a McKenzie Shotblocker Bowhunter and a McKenzie Carbon Buck.  I like the Carbon Buck because of the front leg being part of the vitals; no plastic connection.  Plus the vitals are clearly printed on the target.

Good answer Steve, ya beat me to it!

I think the BEST is a clean pile of sand. Not exactly portable but lasts forever.

I have a Yellow-Jacket, shot it for 2 years, still in decent shape and works good. I shoot it sparingly. Field points come out very hard!

A broadhead doing what it does best makes short work of most any material.

Ive got a delta black bear and a glendale buck both of them work great but the delta buck will take twice as many shots with or without broadheads and the core is half as much and the price of the target is a lot cheaper

I quit buying targets they are too expensive. I make mine for 15 dollars and they outlast my store boughts.

I've yet to try broadheads on my design though. I'm curious how it will work. At 15 bucks I might make one just for BH's.

I agree with a pile of sand. It last forever and is alot cheaper. I do have a yellow jacket for my camp target, and it seems to hold up well after alot of shooting. Morrell doesn't recomend shooting field points into it. Maybe thats why WESTBROOKS field tips are hard to pull. I havn't shot a field point in mine.

How about some details on this $15 design of yours?  I'm all for saving money.

'The Block' works well and it has four differnet sides to shoot at. Once one side is worn out with a BH, I turn it and go to the next. I guess you could say its four targets in one. Cost ya a pretty Franklin though.

I use hay bales stacked 3 high.  When the middle gets worn out I just put one of the others in the middle.

Man you definatly do not get the outdoor channel.  If you did you would know that every one in the world shoots the block target and a mathews bow. Just kidding around with ya.  I am not knocking The Block target it looks like a good idea to me.  I personalyy shoot 2 square bales of hay with some practice broadheads I only shoot 45 pounds though.  I thought if a guy had to he could make a frame to compress the hay bales out of 2x4s and all thread and that should easily stop 55 pound bows.  If I had a pile of sand in my yard it would be full of the neighbors cat's poop.

I'm another one that prefers to pound sand.  I have a pit in the yard at home and one at my hunting cabin.

If anyone has some photos/diagrams of their sand targets, by all means, please post them on this thread. I've been thinking about building one for a year or so for shooting from ground level....Thanks
