I put them in late Aug or early Sep. If you have moisture they'll come up in 2-3 days. They never go to grain and the deer eat the grassy leaves. I put them in too early one year and the stand got up to like 10 inches and seemed less attractive.
When I get a chance I'll post some pics to this thread from that plot this fall. (I'm stuck in Ireland now)

This will be the last batch of Tcam pics I post for 2009. But they're also the first pics from the Bushnell Trophy Cam I got a couple weeks ago.
This buck came in and checked where a doe had pee'd.
