Late Season Longbow Doe!
« on: January 17, 2009, 11:06:00 PM »
I started this thread earlier this week, saying how I was busting out the trad gear for a late season hunt today

 http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=069323

Well, my planning payed off! After sitting in the stand for 3 hrs in 7 degree weather I was offered a shot by this big doe at 15yds. I was 17' up a pin oakin my LW climber in the middle of a hemlock grove. She came in and turned broadside. I drew, hit my anchor, picked a spot and the shot was perfect! she ran 30yds and tipped over. there was very little blood but the Magnus did it's job!

Thanks everyone. It was a lot of fun. I'm headed out again monday to see if I can get on another! when i got out of the stand i saw 8 deer across the field and one was a great 8pt.

I wasn't actually that cold. I still had a few layers in my pack to still put on and didn't need. I never wear gloves when I hunt, have a fleece hand muff and that thing works freakin' great. I just put my arm through my string and into the muff. when a deer comes in I slide my hands out and I already have my bow in my hand. If it gets really cold or I pull an all day sit I will throw a hand warmer in there and it's like an oven

Here is the entrance

Here is the Exit

I guess in hind sight I was a little far forward. I always aim straight up the front leg with my compound, but I want to give myself a little more room around heavy bone with my stick bows. The shot took the top of the heart nearly off.

Hahha. i know, it's a big doe with a huge head. when it first came in I wasn't gonna shoot, cause I thought it was a shed buck. I got a good look at it and when I saw it was a doe i was pumped!
