2009 Javelina
« on: January 19, 2009, 06:17:00 PM »
Not to much of a story to tell, I scouted the river bottom on Saturday and found some tracks of a herd crossing from the brushy mountain side to a field with some new alfalfa planted. I came back on Monday morning at first light stood down wind of the tracks crossing the river about 30 yards I had plenty of cover behind me so I didn't need a blind set up, as you can see by the camo I'm wearing, well nothing showed up by 10:00 so I called it a Morning. ( It was about 18 degrees at first light).

You bet theres more. Came back in the afternoon, got set up about 3:30 down wind just as I did in the morning, I hadn't been there 15 min. when I heard some nose coming from behind me to my left. And at about 30 yards Javelina start coming out of the brush to cross the river bottom, all sizes of them. But they where just a little out of my comfort zone of 30 yards. So I decide to wait because some of them are just hanging around, drinking water. Well I watched them for maybe 10 or 15 seconds and decided to take a shot at one standing broad side at just about 30 yards. And then!

Out comes this guy at 15 yards broad side, he sees me drawning my bow and stops, I looked down at him picked a spot just behind the coiler and let go I hit just where I was looking. He turned around and ran back into the brush. I just froze, I could hear him going down within seconds.
I watched the rest of the herd hang around for a while, but they moved off back into the brush. I took my backpack off got down on my hands and knees and crawled back in under the brush and Cat's Claw, found him at 20 yards with my arrow sticking out of his side. The arrow passed thought both lungs. I have shot some pretty good Javelina's in the past around 40-45lbs but this guy went 49lbs.

Nice javelina. They're my favorite animal to bowhunt. Love to spot and stalk them.

Hey Dave
You know your right about the quartering just a little, I have had alot of Javelina jump the string that close before. You know how fast everything happens when you take a shot. Well thanks for the coment, and it looks like I'm not going to make Tejon Ranch this month, maybe in April, good luck to you guy's.  :wavey:
