need suggetion on broadhead for Bear hunt
« on: January 19, 2009, 09:16:00 PM »
I will be going on my first bear hunt this spring and wanted to ask for a suggestion on broadhead. My bow is a Bob Lee recurve 47lbs @ 28. I shoot Beman classic 500 in full length shaft with a 125 grain head. This shaft doesnt like a heavy head {125 grain flies best}. Thanks, W.A.

+1 on the Snuffer.

Bears have a lot of muscle, but their ribs are cylindrical (about the diameter of your pinky finger) rather than flat, like a deer.

This makes them a "softer" target.

Good Luck!

That's an awful light arrow with only 125grs. up front!

I would seriously consider going up to a stiffer 400 and adding point weight till it's tuned perfect...

Then you could use about any bh out there...except maybe the real big ones as your still only shooting 47#'s....

Any multi blade head would work good.  Bears are thin skinned but have a lot of hair and fat.

I've had good luck with razorcaps. I can go from 125,150,175 and 200. works good for differant setups. Just change out the ferul and use the same blades. DB

I remember seeing a video of someone shooting a bear with a 50# self bow, wood shaft,& stone point. He had a complete pass through. I think any Sharp BH that is well tuned in the boiler room will work.

Joe Skipp gets them scary sharp, I bet even afterthat one wa sdragged thru a bear it is sharper than most guys hunt with. I agree, make sure it is real sharp and stay off the shoulder and you will do fine. Curt he is probaly close to 10gpp. Shawn

Wensel Woodsman or the 125 grain Muzzy Phantom. If it is good enough for Fred it is good enough for me.

:campfire:

I haven't taken any bears with them but deer, hawgs, turkey and a cow elk all fell to MAGNUS STINGER 150 GR 4 BLADE and THE WOODSMAN 150 GR. I don't think the bears hide and ribs are tougher the a wild boar and these B/H's didn't stop at all when passing thru the boars shoulder!!!!!!

I will vote for the stinger they have served me very well.

Most importantly. SHARP.

Second It needs to fly well for you.

There are a lot of good heads and we all have our opinion. I have taken three bears with three different heads.
Zwickey
magnus I
Snuffer

All the sugestions here are good. Get what works for you.

What hill boy said. Sharp and mounted on the end of a well tuned arrow, any cut on contact head will be adequate so long as you do your part and avoid the scapula bone.I personally used old Bear razorheads with the bleeders and got great results. Just think "shot placement."   Grant
