My computer had that virus last fall, bad stuff, in one day shut the computer down. It was in the shop for a week.I'm not computer savy enough to tell you what was done to repair it.

Thanx for the head's up - I know of two folks that got nailed by that virus, and it's a nasty one.

But, don't matter at all to me ... ah, the serenity of running a Linux OS as opposed to an MS OS!  :D

I shut mine down after going to photobucket and trying to retrive pics. I had just got a warning about it at work on Friday.

I had that problem yesterday. I had to do a system restore and a scan with my antivirus program to get it cleared up. I discovered I had 3 different trojan horse viruses which I think came straight from photobucket.

Don't mean to hijack thread. How do you check to see if you have been hacked for credit info besides call your credit card most recent purchases and bank. Is it wise to get a credit report? I heard when you get credit reports it hurts your credit. Also I have Norton anti-virus: is this adequate? Thanks

I switched from explorer to Google Chrome for a browser. It is faster and does a much better job of stopping this kind of pop-up (and others). It is free, just google it and install.

I got that pop-up in explorer too and last week the credit card company called to check a couple of online purchases. They were bogus, so now we have new credit cards. I have a new laptop that came with McAffee. I guess I'm going back to AVG. Even the free version never let this happen.

I was on Photobucket this morning and had no problems.  I don't use IE just for the pop-up bulls$*t that comes through it.

I did have a nasty bug get into my laptop last spring while I was looking at a You-tube video.  A window showed up saying it was 'Antivirus XP 2008', ran an extremely fast 'scan' and claimed I had over 2,000 virus/malware/trojans etc.  I knew I was screwed.  I wound up backing up everything and doing a complete recovery and started over.  I have been able to pick things out of the backup files without unleashing the beast again.

If you do find the culprit that sets these things loose on the net I will gladly furnish the Snuffer.

Wow! My step daughter picked up something on her laptop that infected the boot sector (windows tries to boot then shuts back down then repeats,ect). Sound like the same bug? Hate to reformat her machine if I don't have too...

CRAP!

I'm betting that this is what's been wrong with my computer for several weeks now.  Thinking back on it, it all started about the time we had our KC area trad bunny hunt and I used photobucket to upload pictures for the hunt thread.  At some point I got the same pop up BS saying I had been infected with trojans and needed to do a spyware sweep only it wasn't MY spyware program telling me this.  I tried to X it out and another block popped up saying if I did so my computer would be unprotected and would likely be damaged.  X THAT out and the other one popped back up.  Started battling "boxes" and in seconds had the bottom toolbar filled up with boxes that wouldn't X out.  Finally just shut down manually but it's been messed up ever since.  I have spyware that seems to be working at least partway correct but my virus protection will not perform a sucessful update.

Sadly, I know almost nothing about this stuff and will probably need professional help.

The worst part is this.... My wife just made an online purchase of plane tickets for a trip back home to AZ next month and of course entered her credit card number.  THAT could be trouble eh?

Oh yea, it also wiped out ALL of the folders in My Documents except the ones that came on the computer.  I had hundreds of pics stored in folders.  I have them all on disc, but it was so much easier to find them already in a folder than to have to re upload them.  Got my job resume's too.

I used it just a few minutes ago (with one finger on the power button, thanks to your heads-up - LOL), for my Dino thread, and all went well - thank you, Lord. Hope it stays clean - we do use it soooooooo much!

It's not photobucket, it's a nasty variant of Antivirus 2009 that infects your machine to feed you adware and log keystrokes.

If you happen to get infected by this this, Malwarebytes anti malware cleans it up easily and is a free download.

Virus hit my computer Sunday afternoon. My daughter has a friend who's the Computer expert so I hope he comes over to fix the problem with out formatting my hard drive. Computers at work here...least I can check my mail and emails...

Aeronut, if you check that list of malewares I posted you'll see that Antivirus XP 2008 is listed on it as one of them varmints. Those "scans" they run lie to ya and tell ya you have bajillions of bugs so you will be a sucker and download their "product". If someone if unfamiliar with computers, and doesn't know any better, they believe it and falls for the trap.
I got hit with one of those that you can't shut off too, but, I think, I've managed to get rid of it through my antivirus program (Kapersky).

Malwarebytes is a free download that will scan, but if you want it to do anything else it costs $39.95. I'd stay away from that one. It "found" 22 tracking cookies for me, but wouldn't fix unless I registered and paid the above fee.        

AVG still has free (really) antivirus/antispy software for download. They hide the free stuff a bit, but if you are dilligent, you can find it and it does work. Of course, they sell a version that does more, but this will do the basics.
