I voted 50#-60# for both questions. Most of the bows(selfbows) I make for myself are about 55#@26". I use the same weight/bow for all hunting and target and 3D shooting.

45 and 50 lbs. on my recurves. I'd probably try to work into a 55-60lb bow if I ever got the chance to hunt elk seriously, but I just can't shoot many arrows with that kind of weight and maintain good form.

My recurve was always at 73lbs at 28". I loved It at that poundage but recently lost 12lbs In a years time. Upper limb trouble I believe. The 2nd question not near as much pounds are needed for bear as for elk. I voted 50 to 60 as the minimum but 40 to 45lbs will do just fine on a bear shooting a traditional bow.

When my new bow is shipped to me in October, my bow weights will be between 35-42 lbs.

BTW, since I don't hunt elk, I can't vote in the poll.

To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

61-2# is what I hunt with depending on the bow. I voted for a lighter weight for what I would shoot that game with but years ago I was told that NH required 60# to legally hunt moose with. I didn't want to limit what I could hunt. Now those 62ers shoot more easily than that 50# starter bow did when I began. I see no reason to drop weight now.

55 lbs. I used to shoot 60-63 lbs., but found I was so much more accurate just dropping a few pounds off that. And in the end, I think the added accuracy is the most important variable.

I voted in the low range 40-50#, I have 2 sets of limbs the light set is what I'm hunting with now 47#@27", the heavier set 57#@27" I'm working into. I hope to be able to shoot the heavier set as acurately as the lighter set by fall of 2009.
I have never hunted elk but hope to, I have shot a hog with the light set and was pleased with the penetration.
I would not be afraid to shoot a whitetail with the light set but would not use them for elk.
