Arrow advice
« on: January 29, 2009, 10:32:00 PM »
I am shooting a Shrew Samurai at 45# at my 27 inch draw.  I am tuned using Legacy 2016s cut at 28 inches with 145 grains up front.  I want to increase the point weight to 300 grains.  Would I use 2018s or do I need to go to 2020s or ????

I don't mind increasing arrow length so I am tempted to go with full length 2020s and then cut them down.

Go to carbon and you could shoot a 28" carbonwood 2000 with 300 up front. Otherwise i believe you would need the 2020. Aluminum does not handle high FOC as well as carbon as it does not recover from paradox as quickly. Shawn

Greg, I would first put the 300 grains on the 2016 & shoot them, it may surprise you. The 2016 you shoot right now is pretty stiff for a 28" arrow at 45# draw wt. even with a 145 grain head. If your 2016 can be trimmed down 1/2"-3/4" then I'm willing to bet they will work our & tune pretty decent with 300 grains up front. I assume you have 3-5" feathers?
I shoot a double carbon longbow at 56# I shoot a 2018 28" arrow with 200 grains up front on my elk setup with no problem. I've had as much as 230 grains up front & it flew perfectly.
This is why I mention trying out your 2016 first, but no way should you need more than a 2018 for tuning purposes! Good Luck!

My experience has been the same as Shawn's, aluminums are tough to point load.  If you want to go with EFOC carbon is much more receptive to heavy points than aluminum.

Greg,

If you would like to try a Gold Tip 55/75, I have an extra I could send you along with a insert and a a couple brass adapter weights and a 200 gr. field point. Your total tip wieght will be 315 with the insert, but I THINK it will be the right combo. All free of charge of course. Just PM me your address. The arrow is 31.5 inches.

Let me know,

Todd

I shoot CE 150's at 29.25" w/ 200 grains up front out of my 50lb recurve and they shoot great.  I used O.L's planing method to find the perfect point weight.  I think you would have no problem getting them tuned w/ 300 grains, but you'll have a very heavy arrow for a 45lb bow, and your trajectory will be rainbow-like.  Why do you need such a heavy arrow?  Seems like your current set-up would be great for most hunting.  I would not go with GT 55/75's or CE 250's; at 30", they are both on the stiff side w/ 300 grains up front out of my recurve.  Good luck, Paul.

I appreciate the offer Todd.  Let me check at home.  My first arrows I bought were 55/75 and I think I still have one and the 100 grain brass inserts.  I also have some AD Hammerheads and a Grizzle Stik Sitka and Alaskan.  This is sure a great place for people to make offers like this!

They still list them on their website for the Legacy arrows.  I will check this out. Thanks for the info.
