What do you think of Steel Force overall?
« on: March 12, 2007, 02:42:00 PM »
I know I asked about Talons a few days ago.But now I'd like to know the overall rating for the whole brand by your guys book.I'm still a little intimidated to use a classic type broadheads like a magnus or a zwickey that I would have to start an edge myself using a file.I know I definitely got to learn but for now I've been sticking with razor blade types that I could hold an edge easily with a accu-knife such as stingers and these. The reason I ask is I've already bought some steel force and have some oppurtunities to buy more for a good deal.So what do you think are they a pretty gimicky head overall or are they pretty decent?

Thanks  :)

Don't. Stick with Stingers they are much better, easy to resharpen and don't fall apart on contact with bone (like I've personnally seen SteelForce do). Check the other thread showing what a Stinger did to a shovel!

Don't be intimidated by sharpening your own. It's easy. BUT...I feel that there are much better presharpened heads than Steel Force.

I've also had a Steel Force snap in half after hitting bone. I agree, there are much better pre-sharpened blades out there. Montec's are excellent. Just about indestructable and fly great.

i have heard alot of people say they had problems with steel force. the ferrul doesn't go far enought into the head in my opnion.
i would look into the muzzy phantoms, or stick with the magnus stingers.

I appreciate the heads up guys.I'm gonna give the Talons a try on birds this spring for the serration to jack em' up.But now I gotta figure what to do with the other three packs    !!I'll stick with the stingers and slowly use the Steel force up.I like the phantoms.Just haven't tried any yet.I've yet to kill big game with a stick.I had a couple real close calls last year with the stingers(they're buried in two trees right now).Thats why I was askin for advice from experience.

Thanks

Go dig those Stingers out. They'll still be better than the SteelForce.

i am not a fan of the steelforce. they flew well but leave poor blood trails and bend easily.

i use the razorcaps and love them

You will bend the blade right in front of the ferule if you hit anything other than meat. Get some Zwickies and a new file and go to it. Sharpening is not hard once you get the hang of it. It only takes practice. I have yet to damage a Zwickey beyond repair and I have accidentally shot them into my basement wall.

I don't use Steelforce heads but know of two guys that do. Neither has mentioned the breaking or bending problem. I was stump shooting with one of the guys a couple years ago. He shot over the target and hit a granite boulder with one. The blade actually penetrated the rock and stuck. He tried to pull it out with a pair of pliers. The ferral pulled out leaving the blade in the rock. I remember thinking that it must be a pretty tough head to do that. Might have been a freak accident though.

I've had nothing but positive results with Steel Froce BH's.  I've not hit big bone, but have punched through the thin part of the scapula on a deer.  No damage to the head and still razor sharp.  Same with those that have passed through deer and into the dirt.

I had a friend shoot a big buck with a steel force 4 blade about 4 yrs ago, went in behind shoulder and broke the offside and I mean broke it in about 4 pieces(compound), didnt do anything to the broadhead and was still sharp. As far as a bloodtrail, didnt see it but the buck had what looked like a 5 gallon bucket full thrown down his side so I would say it wasnt hard to follow. I also heard that they had fixed the issue with the ferrules breaking and foldig over.

I have never had a problem with steel force and shoot nothing else. This buck went 15 yards. I shot him with a 42 lb recurve , cedar shafts and a 125 grain glue on broad head. The arrow went thru the near leg , both lungs and stuck in the far leg bone.

Contrary to the other guys experience, I have had EXCELLENT blood trails and I have never had one bend. I have killed Caribou and Turkeys with them and hopefully this fall a moose will fal to one.

I shoot the 4 blade HellFire heads from StealForce with great results.I think they are as tough as any head of the same design.A 3;1 ratio, all heads shaved hair out of the pakage and touch up easy enough. My best blood trails come from a sharp bh and the right shot placement

I just got my first stick two weeks ago, but I've used Steel Force with my compound and never bent or broke a blade, sometimes the ferrule will spread open and allow the main blade to wobble. I quit using them because the bleeder blades will bend if you drop it.

Hey Chuck,
Where'd da steel force come from???LOL
I have some 140gr glues for sale, but thats another thread.
All my woods and now new carbons I just finished tuning are set with steel force 150 screw-ins ..Great flight so far and as for durability I've spoken to some shooters who use them, and they will not change for anythng. As for blood trails, it's all in the shot amd as for sharpness, a cut on contact with bleeders as I believe yours are to me personally, theres nothing better.
Like anythng else, all personal choice...
