Bear Montana string ??
« on: February 03, 2009, 03:00:00 PM »
I just recieved a used montana. I found the brace height suggestions by doing a search. The bow came with an endless loop string. Can I put a fast flight string on it? How long do I need , how many strand should I get?. The bow is 64" 50@28"...Thanks Roy

FF is OK on a Montana, I would say 14-16 strand. You could get away with less, but why!

Thanks Ron

I just looked at 3 rivers and they have 18 strand ff strings. Is that too much? I didnt see any other size...Roy

I had Bobby Graham make a string for my Montana! Although its not FF, it is top notch and being black/white, the string matches the tips perfectly! He is a member here and will make what ever you want!

That should be OK, check out Tollgate Arcery in the sponsers here on this site. George makes a good string. Like bowhuntingfool said you can use Dacron with no problems. I have a bunch of bows but the Montana is my go to bow when I have shooting slups.  Enjoy!

Thanks for the info guys. I went ahead and ordered a b-50 flem string from 3 rivers. I might get a ff string later to play with. I like the quite more than speed since I let my wheels go...Roy

Ive got mine just a little over 7 1/2". It seemed to work there the best with the old string thats on it .

Mine's just under 7 1/2", and shoots very well. But it could be different for everyone of course.

Thanks, Blind one and Zack. That gives me a area to start. Mine comes with a B-50 and a FF string.  Duane

I bought the 18 strand, 61" ff string from 3 Rivers for my sons Montana. With the brace height set at 8" and 2 fur silencers this bow is extremly quite when shot.

18 strands has commonly been used for FF just to get the size up to something that fits the nocks.  You can get away with much less.  Some of the newer materials are larger diameter and you can still get good string fit with fewer strands.  Bear recommends a brace height of 7.5" to 8.5".  The catalog says it comes with a fast flight string, meaning an endless loop fast flight string.

I also had a 50 lb Montana. Made a 14 strand BCY B-500 flemish string with beaver silencers, worked great and gave me pretty good speed. My Montana liked a big brace height, close to 8 inches. Black Micarta looked nice.
