Going Hog Hunting! Equipment???
«

I'm going hog hunting next month for the first time. I'm shooting a 56# tomahawk longbow with 2018 aluminums and 150 grain magnus stingers. Finished arrow weight 560 grains. How many arrows should I bring and is there anything I should need other than what I use for whitetails?

You're good to go! Great set-up for hogs. Whatever you carry to whitetail hunt is all you need. Just be sure to familiarize yourself with hog anatomy as it is different than deer. Imagine a line going right up the back of the front leg. Put your arrow right in tight to the elbow and a bit lower than you might on a deer. Their vitals lie lower and more forward. I have killed 10 with my bow and they are excellent to hunt and good to eat

What you take along for whitetails should work, just keep in mind these buggers have a hide that will make any knife dull. You'll need something with a serrated edge to start the cuts, and a good pelvis saw. I bring rubber gloves (pigs can carry communicable diseases).
GOOD LUCK TO YOU!!!!

Bring your wind indicator and use it a lot! Hunt from the ground if you can. It's a lot more fun than sitting in a tree IMHO... Bring a camera!

If your going to south Texas, the most important thing to bring is a lot of disposable rabbit arrows. If it's a good year for rabbits that can make the trip.
Another item is a portable stool. There is no safe place to sit on the ground down there.
I your headed to anywhere else check on the small game etc and if you need a thermocell for the skeeters.

Lots of good info up there...I will just add bring a second knife and good sharpener.
If you have a chance to get a rabbit hunt it in go for it. Nothing like a pot of rabbit and dumplings or buttermilk fried chicken

I'm going to be in Florida the second week of march. It should be fun, I've never hunted anything other than whitetails. I didn't think of the thermacell or the extra knife. good call! do you florida guys think I need snake boots?

I hunt Florida every year for hogs and will be going the end of Feb. I have only seen one snake in about 8 trips down there and nobody else in my group ever saw a snake while hunting. The mornings might be cool so take something warm just in case. Bring a headlamp and extra flashlights for bloodtrailing, the florida brush is thick. Do a search on google for hog anatomy and take the advice above and put them in tight to the shoulder and low. Wait for a good broadside shot or just very slighly quartering away. The hogs noise is amazing and so is there hearing but the vision is poor butthen can pick up movement easily. If you will be hunting over corn the hogs will be moving around constanly when the first hit the corn but after a couple of minutes they calm down. Wait until then to make your shot and I even wait nowdays for them to move closer to me getting every kernal of corn. Bring the thermacell you might need it and spray your clothes down with the tick spray in case of chiggers. I have a gear list for florida so i don't forget anything, pm me your email and I'll send it to you. You are going to have a great time! Hear is a florida boar I got a couple of years ago.

yeah but they are amazingly loud and I often hear them before I see them. They are also really loud when an arrow goes through them. You can leave your rattleing antlers and grunt call at home. I would also suggest bringing a lot of beer for the evening after hunting.

Hog hunting is da bomb!! 10 - 12 arrows will be more than enough unless you miss a lot!
Like Beachbowhunter said hunt them from the ground, it is a lot more fun and much better shot angle-you need to get both lungs.
