Back Quiver Blues Getting Brighter 2 Repost
« on: February 27, 2009, 09:39:00 PM »
So I've taken some advice. I put velcro under the shoulder flap and tightened it up a bit. Then I learned how to bump the quiver with my left elbow after each shot. Those arrows are right up there anymore once you get the hang of where to bump where to reach etc. I am enjoying having a back quiver that doesn't get hung up on stuff or spill the arrows when you bend down. Nice. thanks to all for all the tips.

sam

PS  Still like those point to point side quivers.
sam

Someone else has to have this problem. Just got a back quiver that is great but it tends to slide down and at some point, the arrows get too far back and down to reach. So I have to pull it back up and forward and all fine until it starts to slip down again. How do you keep a back quiver in place???
Thanks
sam

They all move around Sam unless you have a weird body shape.  You get used to it or put an additional strap on it to stabilize it.  I have seen some hunters put a type of material on the inside of the strap to grip so it will not slide.  It seems the strap works better though.  You may do a search on quivers on this site and ask some of the guys how their design works for them.

I bought a Safari Tuff quiver last year and it changed the way I hunt.  No more fanny pack. Tossed out a few things I didn't need to carry anyway and the rest goes in the zipper pockets on the quiver.  Holds the arrows securely and quietly when walking.

I like it.

What I did was attach a length of cord to the bottom of the strap that I can tie around my waste or to a belt loop. This keeps my quiver located where I want it most times and doesn't restrict like the chest straps.

Thanks. I was thinking of putting something like velcro on the inside of the part that goes over the shoulder to keep it more in place. Also thought of some kind of loop or hook on the yoke of the shirt that would keep it there.

I don't know what it's designed for.....but my safari tuff (arrived, today!) has a small carabiner that I hooked to my belt loop when I adjusted it a little while ago.

No issues with the quiver shifting.

As Indie notes, a Hill Style quiver doesn't move around much.  It also positions the straps on the side, not back of the quiver, and the strap is fastened about 2-3 inches down from the top of the quiver, which holds the mouth of the quiver higher on the back.  If the strap comes off the mouth of the quiver, it invariably slips down the back making the arrows hard to reach.  Something to keep the strap from slipping will help, but the problem is in the design.

I make my own quivers and am partial to back quivers.  I agree the design of the quiver is everything.  On the quivers that I have made, I make the leather strap about 2" wide instead of 1 to 1 1/2" like a lot of others that I have seen.  However, I do taper down the width where the leather strap meets the wearers neck.  I find the extra 1/2" or so of leather where it meets the wearers chest, side and back provides just enough friction to hold it right where I put it.
I have never been lost, but I will admit to being confused for several weeks.

Shorten the strap and make it fit tighter. They are supposed to slide so you can move them around to get through brush and stuff: you swing them under your arm

God bless,

Jose

Lot's of good tips, including Side Stalker. Something to hook to the belt loops keep coming up and seems to be a thing to try. I like the wider strap idea too. I have one and will try it.
Speaking of Hill style, I was looking at some pictures of Hill and his strap is almost under his arm, which means I should try to tighten that up a bit too.

thanks again. I'll keep youposted on my Success/Failure and what works

I tried a back quiver and had all kinds of problems with it.

Went to a side stalker and it was a lot better.

Then I found a Lakota quiver. No problems, no mo.

All is good with the world.

If you look closely at the way Hill, Schulz, Swinehart all wore their quivers, and wear yours the same way, and bump the quiver up with your elbow when you need an arrow,  you will find that the quivers don't move around and you won't have to chase arrows to grab nocks.  This style of quiver must be made correctly and worn correctly to be used correctly.

+1 on the Safari Tuff Arrowmaster quiver - what a great backquiver, er, sidequiver, er, versatile quiver for any kinda use!

It felt a bit weird at first, having the quiver go over my left shoulder instead of right (I'm right handed), but after 5 minutes of use it all felt perfectly natural, 'cause this is the most ergonomic and practical quiver I've ever used.

I have to give another vote for a sidequiver. That said, you can rub a thin film of silicon sealant on the inside of your shoulder strap. The rubberized strap won't slide around half as much.
