Freind's, Flu flu's and Feathers! With pictures!
« on: March 01, 2009, 01:48:00 PM »
Well Today was the day, We went on our chukkar hunt at Royal Flush Enterprises over in Parke county Indiana. This place is actually just across the river and a bit north of Clinton, IN. It is a very nicely ran outfitt with great dogs and guides willing to help even those of us who decide to try our luck with the stickbows!

We did have a gentleman come with us to "back us up" with a scattergun and he got a few more birds than us!

Here's Boomer locked up on point for us!

And here's shooter doing the same!

Watching a good pair of setters work is pure joy! There were alot of arrows in the air all morning long! We opted to go with chukkars instead of pheasants as the owner had told us we had a much better chance of finding the chukkars a second time in case we "missed"! He was right the chukkars gave us multiple oppurtunities.

They have some real good flying birds here by the way there wasn't nothing tame about them!

My good freind Tim Griffin had not shot his recurve for 5 years up until just a couple days ago. He's a pretty fair shot I have to say and it wasn't long before he was shooting real good! I think he may be back in love with that recurve for good this time.

Tim shot the first bird from the air today! knocking him down with a blunt from about 15 yards or so.

Boomer made quick work of the recovery!

We opted to use a combination of both blunt's and field points on this trip as we did not want to hurt any dogs.

The wind was down right wicked today and made it tough shooting with those big flu flu feathers, and we made alot of misses needless to say! The dogs didn't mind the cold windy weather at all though and were just incredible, this has to be my favorite point of the day by Boomer.

If you look at the above picture you can see the water we were on the far side of it maybe 15 yards away. With boomer locked up we actually saw the bird right next to the log. The guide gave us the go ahead to shoot this one on the ground. Needless to say we had a tough time with this one..................... But I did manage to nail him finaly.

All in all we had a great time and I'll definately be going back. The final take with our bows was 1 from the air, and 1 sitting on the ground, and 2 that we shot while they were running! Countless misses and several were taken by our back up guy!

I may try to put together a group to do this again nect winter if anyones interested! The prices were very fair including the guide and dog handler!

Now that just looks like fun, great shooting! Those are some fast flying and running birds.

Dennis

I bet that guide has put a few birds down with that old Model 12 Winchester.

Nicely done. I am heading out to do chuckars next week--now I know that it can be done, Thanks for sharing. That looks like a classic model 12 shotgun and looks like it is in good shape.

Did the blunt tips work fine, or would you have hit more by using those wire bird tips???

Those signature's are from folks I have hunted with, shared a camp fire with, or shot with! All are traditional archers and there's lots of trad gangers signatures on it! Folks from London, England, to Ontario Canada to good old Illinois and most places in between! If you ever bump in to me be sure to stick your signature on it!

Dennis suffers the same affliction most traditional archers I have ever known suffer… modesty. I was these guys “backup” this day. It was a tough day for shooting even with a scattergun. Cold and a stiff wind out of the north. Sure, there were some misses, but I did not see any “bad” misses out of either one of these guys all day. I have flung enough arrows myself to know a “bad” miss when I see one, and it just did not happen. This was a spur of the moment hunt. Give Dennis and Tim some time for planning and practice on aerials…Well if they allow me the honor of tagging along I believe I will go from backup to spectator. By the way, the scattergun is an Ithaca model 37 16 gauge. Nothing wrong with a Model 12 truly a fine gun, but being a southpaw I prefer the bottom ejection of the Ithaca.

Royal Flush is a great operation isn't it?  I enjoy going there, but haven't been able to for the last couple years.  Last time I went I used my 'curve.  Good times! Nicely done!
