Best insert glue for carbon arrows??
« on: March 16, 2007, 01:01:00 AM »
I shoot 55/70 carbons with 100gr brass inserts and have used 5 minute epoxy on the first test arrows....cleaned them with alcohol, but they still popped out after shooting them into a few stumps.
Is there a better epoxy??
Or is there a better 1 step glue??

someone mentioned "gorilla glue" ??

HelP!
Thanks

JB Weld is the best I have found. It is as strong as any 2 ton epoxy but formulated to have some give to it and not be so brittle. I have had a couple come loose after smacking a rock but I believe that was more me in not prepping them right and being in a hurry.

A note too that I have tried many glues like quick set epoxy, goat tuff, high strenghth hot melt etc etc. Nothing comes close as JB Weld for holding them in.

I use epoxy on mine as well, but I use a .243 brush to clean the inside of the shaft and then use a swab and alcohol before inserting the arrow and they stay in very well.  Mark

You may see my post about hot melt glue below.  I have been using a hot glue pot from 3 rivers and the glue they sell for it.  I don't heat the carbon I just go fast to insure the hot insert and glue don't cool, if they do I screw in a field point and heat the point with a lighter until the glue melts.  It seems to be working very well on regular carbons with 100 grain inserts.  I don't think it will work on axis type inserts but I havent tried them yet.

JB Weld works well.  The JB "Quick" Weld doesn't work as well.

I rough it up with the .243 brush at the end of a drill as well clean the inside with alcohol or nail polish remover.  I like JB weld but it's too messy.  so I have done my last 4 dozen with GORILLA GLUE I think thats a permanent as it gets..

Gorilla glue works will, make sure you follow the directions as far as wetting down both surfaces. Also it does not take much glue, Gorilla glue expands when it dries and if you use to much it will split your shafts.

I haven't had any problems with Bohning Powerbond and AAE two part insert epoxy.I think the key is prepping the shaft,I use a carbon prep tool for etching the inside of the shaft. Then clean with alcohol and the epoxy the insert in.
