Broadhead ID, Sharpening tips
« on: March 08, 2009, 01:42:00 PM »
My father gave me his mint Bear Grizzly and several arrows from the late 60' early 70's.  My desire is to eventually take a deer with his old set-up. Can anyone ID what type of broadheads I have. They are three blade heads of some sort, as you can see one has small holes in the ferrul the other does not.  Any tips on getting them sharp would also be appreciated.  I have fiddled with them some, but I am shapening challenged and have not come up with anything acceptable (the ones pictured are not ones I have worked on and are in pretty tough shape)
If anyone would like to take a crack at them, I could pop them in the mail, and would pay or trade you for your time.
Thanks,  Burnsie

I believe the ones with the H on them are Hills Hornets, not to be mistaken for Howard Hill

The other looks like a whiffin bodkin.  Put a piece of emery cloth, about 80 grit to start, on a hard flat surface and push the broadhead forward on the cloth.  Rotate the blade 1/3 after each push.  Once you have all the edges true/straight, go to a 150, then 220 emery cloth or sand paper.

The guys above are right, Bodkin on the left, Hills Hornet on the right.  Your bow looks to be a 1966 Bear Grizzly and is a GREAT bow, much better than the later design with the rounded riser back, IMO (I have a '67, same bow).

There are a couple of very good sharpening tutorials in the How To forum.  The same techniques used for Snuffers and Woodsmans will work with your heads, too.  Also, I should be able to hook you up with some fellows in your area.  I keep the membership for the UBI; lots of talent there.  Do you know Joe Stark in St. Joseph?

Fletcher, yes I've been over to Joe's several times, just down the interstate about 15 miles.  Joe's a good guy,  sorry to find out he's going to retire, but he and Becky deserve it.

I need to get this moved to the How To forum... it's on the members video forum now.

I Think the one with the H stamped on it is a high precision. At least it sure looks like it.  have quite a few of them some still in the original packaging.

I am guessing the bod kin is the one sold by Herter's.. They blued them, and one of the more rare bod kins. Yes the one with the "H" is a High Precision and not a Hills Hornet.

I aint no pro but if you can't find anyone to put an edge on them for you P.M. me and I will do it for free.  It would be a dissaster if the mail lost them though.
