Arrow Info
« on: March 08, 2009, 10:06:00 PM »
Listen you guys that shoot carbons with your trad bows I would like some opinions.
I have a nice used Black Widow coming from a fellow tradganger this week. It is 51@29 62" MAII.
I will be drawing it 29.5 and will be cutting my arrows 31" BOP
I have always shot wood and am considering trying the carbons and not sure what you guys found as a good combination that will get me 10-11 grains per inch with a 125 point.
I also don't want to take out a loan if possible to do it.
Has there been a consensus about which brand works out best and holds up well providing the weight you need without having to add all kinds of extra weight etc.
Any advise would be appreciated

How do you know already what length the arrows are going to be?

similiar grip angle and depth from several BW's I have held and shot in the past, though it is a valid question. I am operating on the assumptions of my draw length which has been the same with recurves of all types for thirty years.
I would obviously be checking that when the bow arrives, but am more concerned with which brand combo etc seems to be working out best for guys if any.
Also with the insert type nocks is there flexability at all with the thin shafts for different size strings.
May be obvious to some of you fellows but these little things I don't know about carbons or aluminum.

I think you would like the CX heritage shafts. You are going to be borderline between the 150 and 250.You could probably shoot the 250 at a long length or the 150 a little shorter assuming you use the regular aluminum inserts and 125 heads. You might consider a 50 grn brass insert and the 250 series.

If at all possible DON'T CUT AND THEN TRY TO TUNE.Carbons respond fast to a change in length. As little as 1/4 inch can make a small difference.I always tune carbons by length. It takes a lot of difference in point weight to make up for a little difference in length.

I would suggest starting full length and bareshafting as layed out at OL's site. You can just pop a nock out and trim from the nock end when tuning.

You may need to reserve a string if you use bigger string material like B-50.I've been using the Accunocks lately and I love them. They would allow you to use a larger serving and still get good arrow flight.

I shoot GT's also but they aren't as heavy as the CX Heritage are hardly as tough IMHO.

To get the weight you want I agree 100% with RH.

I personally have started just leaving carbons full length. The extra length seems to make a more forgiving arrow helps with accuracy with the longer plane when looking down it.You also don't have to worry about all the brass, inserts footings and stuff. So much easier to shoot normal point weights. jmo

For me that will only be two inches, I never see the arrow anyhow so not worried about that, thought these were group spined based on a 28" length of draw though, am I wrong on that?

Always start tuning full length. That 2" of extra shaft length could change the shaft spine as much as 5-10 lbs.

Some day I would like to set up a shooting machine and see how much point weight it takes to make up for a one inch change in length.
