My new ebony Firefly/ pics
« on: March 10, 2009, 11:29:00 PM »
Today I received my new Firefly FX from Jim Jones and I'm really happy about this new bow.  This is the first real custom bow I've had made for me and if it shoots anything close to how it looks, it won't be my last!  I contacted Jim on 1/22/09 and told him that I wanted a nice looking "custom" bow without looking too "busy".  I'm primarily a hunter so I wanted darker wood and no glare.  We settled on a macassar ebony riser with maple accents, and Jim's waterfall bubinga veneers.  Ebony wedge and limb caps and tips to finish her off.  She's 64" long 50#@28" pull.  My first impression taking her out of the box was that the riser was much slimmer than I'd anticipated from looking at pictures posted here earlier, and I was quite happy about that.  The best way to describe the grip is it's very "organic"; if that makes sense to anyone other than myself.  It just seems to fit your hand in a very natural way.  The balance of the bow is excellent and the fit and finish appear to be also.  The bad news is that an MRI last wednesday showed a partial thickness tear of my left bicep and I'm under doctors orders to not use my left arm in any manner for an indefinite amount of time.  I'll probably sneak a couple of arrows through her tomorrow anyway!  Here are few pics that like all others don't do it justice.

Quickly snuck downstairs and shot a few groups.  The arrows I used are surely too stiff for this bow, but I was still able to get a feel for how she shoots.  Very smooth draw, (28" vs. 64" bow)which was to be expected, no hand shock, and most noticeable, very quiet.  Can't say anything about speed shooting inside at 10 yards they all seem fast!  And typical: right after the above pic of the bow near the fireplace she slid off and dinged the riser on the hearth putting about a 4mm wide dent into the wood.  Oh well, she's not for show anyways!  Thanks for the comments fellas.

Great great bows and a better guy to deal with one could not find.

They are very fast bows - I chrono'd mine a couple of weeks ago and shooting just over 10 grain per # @ 29" was getting 183 fps.  For a r/d longbow they just don't come much better than that.

In fact my new Predator recurve which are the fastest recurves that Blacky S. has tested - only seems to be marginly faster than my F/F.

This is one bow I will never sell and will always be my go-to-bow for longbows.

Beautiful limbs.  The riser could be more "organic" for me.

You said you put a dent in the riser ? You can probably get it out with a damp wash cloth and a steam iron.
