I don't have an objective opinion, as I have never seen or used Sitka spruce. I have enjoyed shooting Douglas fir arrows, and have been blessed with a number of good animals falling to them since starting to shoot them last year (one brumby, three pigs, one camel). I'm no expert, but they seem very straight to me, and very strong. Mine come from Doug Knight at  www.surewoodshafts.com  .

Another fan of fir here.  All the shafts I've made from fir have come out nearly "shooting straight" right out of the jig.  They straighten easy like cedar and hold up just as good, maybe better.

No opinion of spruce though, sorry.

I'll take spruce, it takes a good beatin' ,stays straight, getting a 600+g arrow is no problem. When the goin' gets really tough I get out the Ash.

Fir IMO is the nicest shooting arrow wood.  It seems to be a little "snappier" to me and recovers quickly from the release.  Generally heavier than cedar, stronger and very attractive either plain or stained.  Sitka spruce is has the highest strength to weight ratio of any wood, which is why it is used to build airplanes.  Pretty consistent weight and slightly lighter than cedar on average.  Shoots as nicely as cedar IMO.  TG Sponsor Braveheart Archery sells Surewood Fir.  These shafts remind me of the Acme Premiums of old.

I've made and shot POC, spruce, and douglas fir shafts. The weight, durability and straightness of Surewood Shafts are my choice today. I have some old ACME POC shafts that I am hoarding though.

After all, Howard Hughes built the largest flying airplane in the world out of Sitka Spruce, the Spruce Goose.

It wasn't made out of spruce...it was made out of birch. Guess they thought it would sound catchy...
