Well I learned somethings...it's HARD! I sure appreciate how well some of you guys do this! How do you go about lining up the cresting strips that coordinate with splice?

Snag:
Two ways to line up the cresting stripes and the splice. make the feather longer than needed, splice then cut too length measuring from the splice too both ends. Or do the splice after the arrow is fletched. It can be done the way you did it, however every measurement needs to be very precise. Its extremely important that each crest be exactly the same size and in the same location on each shaft.
My mentor use to say a true arrowsmith will not be able to tell any difference in any arrow in the dozen. Its easy to make one that looks good, not so easy to make 12 that all look the same when laid side by side.

Exactly Bob! I totally agree. I am trying to get to that point of all 12 looking the same. But I'm just learning this splicing technique..so trying not to beat myself up too much...just need to figure out how to improve. Right now my biggest obstacle is getting the splices the same width. I was thinking of taking a small ruler and attaching straight pins say at 1/2" apart. Then using this to poke into the frills to separate them at the same width....?

Snag, make yourself a measuring board about 4 or 5 inches long it doesn't matter and put lines on it like a tape measure lay your feathers down on it to measure exactly the same size for each splice and cut with an exacto knife. I have a picture from a old TBM using the board like this. I will look for it and scan it tomorrow and e-mail it to you. Looks good above. Flint

look good, what aromaker said, i like to do them after fletching so they are inline, as for not beeing able to tell a difference in a dozen well my qc will never be that strict as i would never finish a dozen.

Looks great. I use a paint stirring stick to make lines on with a pen and tape measure. Then cut with exacto knife. Gary
