Inset compass in riser gone bad

I bought a compass and inset it into to the riser of El Cheapo, my homemade longbow.  About 2/3's the way through the first hunting season, it quit working....not good for finding your way out of the swamp.  

Although a fairly heavy bow with minimal handshock, did the vibration of the bow kill it?  I hunted with some glo-mits that used magnets to hold back the "mit" part.  I know the magnets threw off the compass if my hand was too close in cold weather, but could that have demagnitized the needle?

Now I don't know what to do with a dead compass in my bow......   HELP.  Steve

They go bad.Just drill out the old one and stick in a new one.

Yes, or if you don't want another compass then you could inset a medallion or something like that.

maybe it hasn't gone bad. maybe it's pointing out the game for you. might be the best compass going.        

you could leave it there and tell your mates it's a game finding compass. it would be an eyeopener if it worked one day

Got a jack sparrow thing going on huh.  I have never had a compass demagnetize but have had them come off their fulcrom/pivot point.

Either it's off the pivot needle or it's degaused(sp). Either way I'd remove it and replace it with a new and better one. If you actually use it, I'd say put a medallion or coin in the hole and get a Brunton Eclipse or similar grade of compass.

No, it is spinning fine.  Just wondering if the vibration could have degaussed it?

Hate to put another one in there and have it go bad in a year.  Anyone have this problem?


I have three or four decent compasses, I loved the convenience of having it right there at all times.

Can I ask where you got it from?  Was it a Bear compass?  I've lined a few of those up before and had them pointing all different directions.  Wouldn't trust them for nuttin'.
