Probably shouldn't have done this bowfishing thing...
« on: March 30, 2009, 08:14:00 PM »
Someone told me to combine my passions..

vintage bows/bowhunting...

and fishing....

This may have been a very bad idea....

I feel a new addiction has taken root.

I may never find time to work now.

That is one chunky gar. I can't wait till I'm out there. That's a shortnose or is it a spotted gar? Nice looking area!

Nice fish! I feel the same way about bowfishing. Can't wait till it warms up and the carp start spawning.

I've heard gar is exceptional when fixed like that.

Yeah, it is addictive.  I really like stalking fish in the shallows and along the bank.  The water is warming up and the carp will be rolling soon.

That's what I'm talking about! And what crossstickspro says, good eating! Been shootin at suckers here and there. This is what us old timers did in the spring before turkeys invaded. And still do!

Who could miss a gar that big?  :D  Just kidding, looks like fun and I have to do some soon. The carp were stirring up the lake surface in the rain the other day. That was at Lake Marburg.

I did'nt know they had gar in the north east. We have a ton of em in Texas. Some of our alligator gar grow over 10 feet long and weigh better than 230 lbs. You can't beat bow fishing for action and a plain old good time!

We've all got it bad.

Just be sure and DON'T eat the gar's eggs, I hear their highly toxic.

Thanks everyone. Leo, you were right!! This is CRAZY fun!! I haven't laughed so hard in years. I did manage to stick about a 30lb carp, and that was like a 3 ring circus. The thing took off, I got some line back in, and as he took off again, the line got all tangled up in the rods and reels (lesson #1...put all the rods in the rod box). While I was trying to hold this fish from running away with our rods, the line sliced into my hand (lesson #2...wear gloves). The carp finally pulled off the arrow (lesson #3...don't use a gar point on a big carp). Like I said....CRAZY fun!!

VTer, I have no idea what kind it was.

MVB, this was actually one of the smaller ones swimmin' around. I always wanted to come to Marburg and bowfish. Might make it happen if I can.

threeundr, we traveled to Santee Cooper in South Carolina. Not sure, but I think somewhere up here in Maryland there must be gar. Plenty of carp and skate though, should be loads of fun.
