The first hen fed slowly past my window... much closer than I'd ever anticipated. It would be cool if the gobblers did the same, but I was a little paranoid of the open window.

I really didn't have that much experience with the Double Bull and open windows. I'd hunted for deer from them a lot, but always with the screens down. This was a learning experience for sure.
The lead hens didn't pay attention to me as I sat there watching from mere feet away. What would happen when I had to move?

The question was about to be answered and answered soon. The gobblers were now just a few yards to my right and on a course that would bring them right where the hens were now passing. My bow was already in position and all I had to do was wrap my fingers around the string... which I now did.

Apparently I was invisible to these birds. COOL!! I started a slow, straight back pull on the string. At half draw all hell broke loose!

Turkeys were going in every direction like feathered shrapnel from a weird avian bomb. Out of the corner of my eye other movement caught me eye. DEER!!

Brown, four legged, non open window liking, deer!

Apparently the deer had come along from the opposite direction out of my line of sight. That wouldn't have been hard to do with my full attention devoted to the gobbler in front of me.

When they got enough angle on the blind to see the black hole of the window they freaked out,

which in turn freaked out the turkeys, which left me alone in my blind with nothing but the gentle sighing of the wind blowing through the trees.... and the wind whispered...turkey!!

Thanks for posting that pic!!

I already had a poster of Jimi on a Harley (my other love) in my shop. This will go nicely. Nothing beats tillering osage to "Villanova Junction". I think we would have gotten along famously!

Charlie,

Were you hunting without a decoy? You didn’t write anything about setting one up so I’m assuming you didn’t have any decoy’s set out. Is this your normal way of hunting turkeys? I don’t have a lot of experience hunting turkeys so I’m wondering if there are times when decoys shouldn’t be used or have you found them to be ineffective in the past so you don’t bother with them.

Good story… I know you had a blast. I always appreciated it when our members take the time to share a hunt with us. The story telling can be time consuming but these stories are one of the things that make this site such a jewel.

gate keeper I havent used a decoy in years and kill at least two every year. I feel that they hang the birds up, but then again other people use them with great success.

I just got home from a week in camp. I read three pages, put my old bell-bottoms on, and plugged in an 8-track of Country Joe singing "1,2,3,4, what are we waiting for". THEN, I was gently reminded that this was a Charlie Lamb story....HeeHeeee! Congrats on the bird C-man! They are sure struttin perdy here right now too. CK

Thats it. I find them on the roost the night before, get near there early the next morning and call them off the roost. thats an extremely simplified way of doing it. Or if I dont find one the night before I use an owl call in the morning the locate them. Im not a defensive hunter when it comes to turkeys, I like to move on them then when I get them to gobble and know they are coming then it turns into a waiting game.
