What spine POC arrows do I need?
« on: April 08, 2009, 06:09:00 PM »
Recently sold my Horne's brushbow and just placed an order for a Shrew.  So for the next year I will be using a recently purchased Shakespheare Sierra Recurve 52" AMO and 40# @ 28" which is my drawlength.  This is my first recurve and only my second bow.  Can you guys advise me on what spine POC arrows I should go with?  Would like to shoot 30" arrows with 125-145 grains up front.  Thank you.

Hey there's a guy on *********** with the same situation (funny huh) - you didn't say your draw length just the length of arrows you would like - go with 50-55 lbs with 125

Foxfire has spine charts you can look at - you can alos ask the place you are buying them from (they should know)

G'day Alan,

I was sent this information a couple of years ago when I first wanted to shoot wooden arrows, by a very experienced TradGanger. I hope it helps.

1. Start at your draw weight, and jump to the next spine group (eg. you draw 40#, so jump to 45# of spine).

2. If shelf is cut to or past centre, add another 5# (if bow is not cut to or past centre, subtract 5#).

3. If using a low-stretch string material, add another 5# (if using Dacron, subtract 5#).

4. For every inch of arrow over 28", add another 5# (for every inch of arrow under 28", subtract 5#).

5. If using more than 145 grains up-front, add another 5#.

That should give you a starting point. This formula has worked well for me (I can do final tuning with point weight and / or building-out the strike plate). The arrows that I have arrived at from this calculation fly straight and bring down big animals (well, small ones too).

Cheers,

Ben

I shoot 60/65 spine in my 41lb recurve and in my 43lb long bow my draw is 30" an I shoot a 30.5 inch arrow 145 grain head. Hope this helps.

Ron told me a good rule of thumb is add 15# to your bow weight.
