Has anyone had any issues with your states DNR/ consevation officers while roving/ stump shooting on public or private land. I was wondering if it is concidered Hunting even if you are only carrying field points and blunts.

I would ask them in the state you are planning to do some stump shooting.But I can see anything wrong with doing it on private land,you just praticing.But I think I would have my hunting license with me anyway on public land just in case it might be an issue.A buddy and I have did it here in OH with no problems,we had a blast shooting at cattails around the pond,shooting at a foam disc rooling and thown in the air on the 100 yds gun range.No one was there on a weekday so we used the gun range for shooting bows.

There was a post a few months ago about some guys being told to not stump shoot on public land. I think it was am issue of target practice in the wrong place not hunting.

Technically they could site you for having the wrong equipment for the intended hunting season/area. I know in Hawaii your arrows must be equiped with broadheads and bow must be of required poundage which is at least 40# for stick bows and 35# for compounds.

In Ohio, if your out stumpin on other than your property you need a hunting lic.. And that is straight from the ODNR in March of this year.

I would have a small game license, that way you can always say your your hunting something be it opossum or some other "year round" critter.

I know in Michigan you can go onto state land and shoot a gun thru the spring, summer and early fall and then they ban shooting a week or two before the gun season opens. So, it is my nderstanding that if you can shoot a gun you can shoot a bow to. I have never had a problem where I hunt. I ususally go out a couple of weekends in August and September and always carry a quiver full of blunts and judos with me for stumpin. Never had issues with the DNR officers I have run into. They always ask what I am doing and I tell them and show I have no B/H arrows with me. That's is my experience in Michigan.

In PA stumping is considered "plinking" which is illegal. However, coyote season is open every day of the year, so... I'm always coyote hunting.

Not a problem here in Colorado. When I asked the ? at the DOW office two of the officers said they actually stumped from time to time also.

In Missouri they said to "target practice in designated range only". When asked if it's ok to just say you we're squirrel huntin' and missed one, he got all upset and no longer wanted to talk...

I had run in inMaryland a few years back in a state park. He gave me a warning but told me I WOULD be arrested if there was a next time. BILL

Here In WV you cannot legally have a gun or bow in the woods during a closed season. Coyotes are open all year but have to be hunted in the feilds during the off season. With that said . I have talked to the local officers and they know what stump shooting is, they are OK with it unoffically ???? Anyhow I would say if someone complained you would be arrested here.

Here is a link to my story about a run in with the Michigan DNR while Stump Shooting. Make sure you know your states laws. Now I just carry a valid small game license and all is well.

wow i cant belive that anyone would have a problem with it unless endangering other people. do they not alow a kid to go in the woods with a slingshot, if a oficer actualy threatened arest you would have a heck of a case. thier are no problems up here, ive been stumping in a refuge around a campground and the oficer asked if he could try.

yeah, we've got it pretty good up here. We can also open carry firearms almost anywhere too with virtually no hassle

As Tims story said, in Michigan if you want to stump on state land you must have a valid small game license. And you must be careful of what kind of state land you are on. State forest, no problem, state game area, no problem, state land designated as a recreation area, cant do it from april 1 till sept. 15. Oh yea, and you better have some hunters orange on to.

I do it all the time. I can't imagine any warden here giving any problems to anybody stumping. I feel sorry for some of you guys who live elsewhere. Come to Wyoming!
