A 5 year journey for turkeys
« on: April 21, 2009, 03:07:00 PM »
I started out chasing turkeys strictly with my bow 5 years ago. Along the way I have had a lot of close calls, missed shots and learning experiences. I was hoping this would be my year to end the drought and to do it with Miss Faith during her stay with me. Unfortunately I haven't been able to dial her in with the arrows/broadheads I have on hand yet so I have went with my faithful PSR Widow. Yesterday was a bust other than one hen in the field. This morning started with a bearded lady and 2 of her friends at 10 yards

After the girls moved up the hill I heard the spit and drum of "Meleagris gallopavo" and caught movement out of my left window as he struted in. I decided if he was still strutting when he hit my shooting window I would letr rip. He was and I did.

And THEN? And THEN???   :saywhat:

Killdeer..and then along came Jones!   :biglaugh:
Long, long afterward, in an oak I found the arrow, still unbroke;
And the song, from beginning to end, I found again in the heart of a friend.

There is a string tracker attached to something. Hopefully it's wearing spurs.....NO! not a cowboy.

Sorry guys,
Didn't mean to Lamb you along. I got busy at work and couldn't get back on. Anyways he comes into the window in full strut and I realease and he turns inside out and trys to fly but can't and then he is gone back the way he came peeling off line at a rapid clip that gradually slowed and then became still. I waited a few minutes and then got out of the blind for a picture.

So I decide to pack up and give him a little time to die, well by the time I get back to the truck my dad has shown up ready to help with the tracking job. So after about 25 minutes we head back to the field and start following up the line which ran into a ditch in the middle of the field. The first thing I see is blood which is bright and red.

Followed by my turkey blowing out of the ditch with the arrow in him and he is headed towards the creek. After about 150 yards of the line goes by us it stops and we figure he is hiding under some brush by the creek and figure the best thing is some more time to expire. Well we give him two hours and then head back to follow up the string which runs over the bank of the creek where we find.....

Mr. Turkey has pulled the arrow out crossing the creek.   :banghead:

So off goes dad to get a bird dog for the rest of the trail. As he is leaving I tell him to bring his shotgun back too. I am not feeling good about a recovery now.  :scared:

I really, really don't like Charlie's storytellin' style   :saywhat:   but you are some kind of special when you are your own verb...

Lambin'   :clapper:   that is priceless.

I am looking forward to the final pictures of the quest completed...he's got to be laying on the other side of the creek!

Turkeys with a Trad bow are one of the hardest critters I have hunted. They never hold still, see every move you make, and are just plain hard suckers to kill with a arrow. I started the season off here with a slam dunk and drilled a Jake at 20 yards right through his back and out his chest dead in 5 yards. Since then filling my second tag has not been easy includeing two misses at big toms. Hold in there and keep after them!

Thanks, 4Rnr!

I suppose that one might say that our fair narrator is, um, on the Lamb.
