Deer, Turkey and a White Elephant
« on: April 21, 2009, 11:14:00 PM »
On a cold day here in Nebraska a box came, "oh boy", I thought, since I love to get packages I couldn't wait to open it up!
It was from "WhiteBuffalo" and my White Elephant gift!
Inside the box was, among other really cool things, 5 Firefly arrows and one in particular that was broken at the tip, had some blood stains left on it as well.
In my conversations with Jason he mentioned he had shot a deer with that arrow and he sent them to me because he figured they would work well out of my bow-
With turkey season approaching I decided it would be really something else to take a bird with that same arrow. So as luck would have it this past Sunday at about 3:15 I had a group of 34 hens walk through the decoys, behind them in the distance I see 3 Toms, in what seemed like forever, and with a little seductive purring on the old slate, the largest of the 3 decided to make his move. He circled the very tree where I had shot my first ever Turkey and came to ten yards, in full strut and facing me, I took this bird an inch above the beard, he made it less than 8 yards and fell dead on the arrow, THE ARROW with which Jason had shot a deer and now I had taken a turkey!
I had hoped to pass this arrow along to another tradganger but unfortunately the shaft exiting his rear and sticking out of his chest broke in three pieces. I have four left that I would gladly send out so the story can continue.

I had checked the bird over to locate the rest of the shaft but found nothing and didn't notice the exit wound so I "ass"umed that it was still inside- hung the bird in a tree for a quick photo, hit the 10 second timer ran back to spread the tail and felt something in the way, yeah it was the broadhead slicing through my hand. It was sticking out of his backside, stupid me! I'm sort of a big guy so if I don't hit my head, fall down or bleed everyday I'm doing something wrong.
Thank you Jason "WhiteBuffalo"
One down, now for the big boys! The birds here seem to still be grouped up but the next few weeks should get em goin pretty good. This bird only had just short of 7 inch beard and little spurs but he was the biggest of the three and the only one to offer a clean shot. I've taken some really nice birds out here, real beard draggers and have seen some double beards and bearded hens so those are next! Soon as the hens are sitting on those nests and the big Toms separate the fun really begins! Good luck and shoot straight!
Todd

This was one of the lesser ones he was hangin out with. He came in to about 5 yards.

Bowmaster... it usually means it is a younger bird.  The rest catch up as the bird matures.

The younger birds (lesser) or Jakes all have this shape- it's how you can tell quickly at full strut that they are not full adult birds. I wouldn't normally shoot a younger bird but with Jasons arrow and the shot presenting itself I proudly siezed the opportunity as any turkey with a stick bow is a trophy!
This bird has pretty white tips but I would consider it a Hybrid as we don't see many true Merriams around here, mostly hybrids and some easterns.

Nice shooting! Center punched with a Grizzly and it was still plenty sharp. Turkey scratch fever has symptoms like; waking well before daylight, wandering around the woods with a bow, sitting hidden and making yelping sounds - no cure.

Well then, I'M INFECTED! I feel better now with a diagnosis, heck I've been sick a long time then. It'll be a good death

WOW! Guess I should have consulted with DR. Shaun a long time ago. Congrats on the bird and great story!

Way to go!  I hear ya about not usually shooting jake's, but sometimes other factors in the hunt mean way more that how old a bird is....

Last year one Sunday, I had my son with me for the first time and I also had Miss Faith....any legal bird would have meant the world to me!

Congrats    :notworthy:
