Anyone have any pics of bows skinned with water moccasin skins? I might have just turned up a good source for them and was wondering what they may look like on a bow.

I think they're kind of bland, but if the price is right (free), they would look a lot better.

I shot two while fishing and hog hunting a couple weeks ago and if you peel the scales off after they are dried they have a much lighter color and even a pattern to them, the ones I got were too small for bows but plan to rap a few arrows

Personally I think they are some good looking skins. Bob Morrison is going to put a real nice looking set on my new Mini 14 ILF.

If you can find the right snakes, they really are a gorgeous skin. Some are so much prettier than others it's hard to consider them the same snake.

The pattern is alot more visable after the scales are removed on the cottonmouths.

Thanks guys. The ones I may be able to get will be priced right.....free. I just have to skin them. There may be copperheads or the occasional rattlesnake as well. I'll just have to wait and see. For this are though, I know moccasins will be the primary species.

Hey Guys,

My experience is that cottonmouth skins are sort of greasy (more so than rattlesnakes) are you doing anything different when you skin them? Other skins I pretty much just peel off the snake, scrape the fat of the flesh side, air dry a little and then freeze them until I need them for a bow.

Wipe the flesh side good with Acetone before you soak them up to apply to the bow. I also sand the flesh side lightly w/ 320 grit.I do that with any snakeskins except Copperhead.
