Finally got to sit in the blind and try for a turkey. They were gobbling heavy and answering every messed up noise I made. A turkey hunting pro I am not!
I was hunting with an old friend. He took his shotgun and I took my JK Traditions Kanati. Just got it off here a couple weeks ago and really like it.
The birds came off the roost, gobbled a couple times then shut up. I continued to call but got no replies. 30 minutes past and we figured they went down the other side of the hill. Six deer were feeding in the field we were on and they had our full attention. Looking at them through the bino's is always a good way to pass the time. They were coming right to us and all I could think was wish this was October.
I looked out the other side of the blind and was surprised to see a bunch of turkey's heading our way. 4 gobblers and 3 hens about 40 yds away. The heads on the gobblers were snow white, completely. Neither of us has ever seen them that white before, I wish I would have gotten a picture. A new camera is definitely on the list.
They came over a little knoll and saw the Jake decoy we had out, the biggest one headed right for it. Jeff set up the decoys in the dark and put it on the other side of a bunch of limbs, I had no shot. The rest of the birds stayed out at 40 yds. He kept asking do you want to use the shotgun ? No way, I wanted one with the bow or none at all.
The hens started to head to the pasture and I was pretty sure we were done. The big boy gave up on the decoy and went to the field before I could get a shot. A Jake ended up following him, he paused in an opening at 20yds and I sent the arrow. I shot through the mesh on the blind. I have never done that before. The arrow flew perfectly and when I heard the sound of impact I was pumped. The bird flopped around but did not go anywhere. First trad kill bird down !!!!
When we went over to the bird my buddy kept saying he could not believe I killed one with "that stick". He then said he felt like he'd be cheating if he used a shotgun the rest of the season. He took his bow the next day (compound though).
Pictures aren't great, like I said a good camera is on the list.
