What have I done?
« on: April 27, 2009, 04:10:00 PM »
They say bad company corrupts good morals and I guess there must be something to that as I have let my hunting buddies coax me across to the dark side.

I am a BRAND NEW traditional shooter (not comfortable enough to hunt yet).  I purchased a reflex/deflex design longbow from a young maker in West Fort Worth named Chris Mayo.  60" 50lb @ 28.  Very pleased with the bow though it is a little harder to shoot than my buddies' BW and Great Plains recurves.  I'm gettin there.

I'm enjoying the Tradgang sight though all of the info is a little overwhelming.

I've had to reprogram my thinking.  It's weird but when I go out to shoot all I have is the bow and a hand full of arrows, I keep looking around to see if I've left something.  It doesn't feel like I'm packing up and moving as with the compound.

Welcome to the Trad campfire, as for being the dark side I always thought I came from the dark side as trad is a whole lot brighter!! trying to get within 20 yards of game and then make it happen seems to be a closeness with nature only found in trad!!!   :campfire:    :archer:

Welcome, my friend. Yes it can be quite overwhelming what with tuning arrows and whatnot, but you're in good company. I found my arrows started flying straight when I finally got out of my own way! Interesting how we can easily overthink things at times, eh?

Also, you can't ask for a better community than this one, the encouragement is awesome! I still haven't connected with my first trad harvest yet, but I'm working on it (you'll get your picture and story yet, jimmerc!!!)

Thanks for the welcome.  NorthernCaliforniaHunter you have said the samething my buddies said.  "Don't overthink the thing."  You guys are right.  I had some good help locally and got my arrows pretty close from the start and it has made shooting a lot more fun.

I do a lot of pig hunting around here and took my first pig with a muzzleloader a couple of weeks ago.  Can't wait to do it with my longbow.

Thanks again for the welcome.

what Jack said, you are in deep do do   :help: !!!
tip, start buying cheap bows at yard sales now so when you order that new custom bow your better half will not know the difference. Or better yet buy her a bow and get her started. enjoy the journey, it's well worth every penny....

I think that shooting at targets is one world; and hunting with a bow is another. I have been shooting at targets for months - and went up the road to my bear bait and stopped to hunt some ground squirrels.
I started stalking; and waiting for shots; and making shots that were just plain fantastic; even though the little buggers ducked each shot.
No blood was shed; but I was hunting again; and felt refreshed.

It never ceases to keep the world out of my mind; and makes me more connected to the wild.

You're in great company!! Never enjoyed archery more than since I joined the dark side, light side, whatever. Also have met the best folks ever at 3D shoots and here on TG. Enjoy the comraderie that will happen when you make the effort to shoot and talk with folks of like mind.
