Mike@Maddog and My New Selfbow
« on: April 29, 2009, 07:45:00 PM »
My new and 1st BBO ever arrived today. Mike at Maddog Archery is top notch and this bow shoots straight. It is a 69" bamboo backed osage that is 45#@29". After a few warm up shots to get used to shooting this style of bow, I managed a decent group at about 18yds. A little more practice and I think I'll have the hang of it!    :)   Below are some pics of the bow and my 18yd group. The pics of me shooting didn't come out well so, I'll post some better ones on my next shooting day.

If you want a good quality bow at an affordable price, plus a great guy to deal with, then let me recommend Maddog with two smoking thumbs UP!

Nice bow, seems to shoot well for you, too. What spine are your arrows?

SCATTERSHOT: I'm not sure of the arrow spine. Mike sent them with the bow and they flew pretty good. I would imagine they are 45-50 spine or somewhere in that vicinity.

I've got some 45-50 spine cedars that I'm going to shoot through the bow and see how they do. A friend of mine has a ranch close by and let me hunt there last year. He invited me back this season and this is the bow I'm going to use. I got to 20yds on three does on the last day of my hunt so, perhaps this year will be my year.   :)

That is a very pretty bow you have there.
I've only heard good things about Mad Dog Archery and you made it one more good thing.

Not to take anything away from your new bow but this is a backed bow: bamboo backed osage also known as BBO.  A selfbow is one with no backing of any kind.  The bower then just follows a single ring of the tree and that is the backing.
But no matter, in my book fiberglass is fun and wood is wonderful.  Enjoy your wonderful new wood bow!

I'm on the list for one of these BBO longbows myself... Looking forward to it even more now thanks to your report.

(Tho I didn't know that could be possible...)  :D

Paul, I was actually quite amazed at how smooth it shot. You have to kind of "snap" shoot this type of bow and the pull and quick release was rather smooth for me. As stated, a little more practice and I shoot be decent enough to hunt with it.

I have been back and forth trying to decide to bite the bullet and order one of these BBO bows from Mike. I think I have about decided to do so.  Could you possibly post so close up pics of the bow?

Ron, I haven't scored on a deer yet but, I have scored on a few bows!   :biglaugh:  I'm having fun but the wife is about to get her first kill, if you know what I mean!

Good to hear from you. How's things up in your neck of the woods? Send me some more photos from your trail cam. Always enjoy those.
