I had a great morning hunt. I almost didn't go as I had a parent teacher conference at 8 am. My wife warned me not to be late.
I knew it was going to be a beautiful morning so I decided to sneak a quick hunt in. I have been seeing some nice birds but just hadn't had one come in to the dekes so far this year. Anyway, I set up in the pitch black and as it was getting light I heard at least 3 gobblers behind me and close.
I could also hear some hens. When the toms flew down they followed the hens into the field. For the first half hour the toms chased the hens around the field. They would answer my calls but wouldn't leave the hens. Finally one of the toms saw my decoys and very slowly worked towards the blind. For over 10 minutes he strutted back and forth at about 25 yards. This is a little out of my comfort range for turkeys so I waited. When I would quietly purr he would work a step or 2 closer. Finally he was broadside in the window at 15 yards. I hit full draw and saw the arrow drive into his wing butt. He covered maybe 10 yards and was finished. I used my string tracker but it wasn't needed. 21 lbs 6 oz. 9 1/4 inch beard. My best turkey. I was home by 7:10 with time to spare for the conference
