Arrow size and point weight?
« on: May 14, 2009, 06:58:00 PM »
I have been bow hunting for about 20 years now but have allways used a compound. A couple of years ago I bought a Saxon American long bow and have made a vow to get a deer with it this year.
The problem I am having is no one around my area hunts with trad. archery and is unable to help me decide what might be the best set up.
My bow is 64" 55# @28" I like aluminum due to the fact I can cut them as needed. To prevent unnecessary spending what size do I need and what point weight do I need?
Currently I am using 28" 2216's with a 125gr point. I think this may be way overspined but it is what I was told to use. I only bought 3 shafts to try out so I am not out alot of $$.

1. should I just get a heavy point and use with the 2216's
2. should I just get a few more arrows of different spine with the propper point size.

I know this all depends on the bow but point me in the right direction.

Thanks Matt

2018 seems more in the ball park.

Thanks for the reply. I think I may buy a few and give it a try.

I would agree with 2018's or even 2016's depending on your draw length. But I too think the 2216's are way overspined for a bow that is not cut past center.

Do you need to cut them all the way down to 28"??

If ya can stand an inch or 2 hangin out the end you can adjust the length a little at a time and stop when you get the flight your looking for with ??grs up front.

if ya need to cut them that short and have a 26-27" draw than I'd think the 2016 with 125 up front.

I used the 2018s @ 29.5 out of a 57# LB drawn 28" and 125 up front.I think they weighed around 540
Shoot straight and have FUN!!

I just ordered the test point kit, it has points from 100gr. to 250gr. Do you think a 200-250gr point would do ok? There is just no where to get just a few arrows to try out, I would like to get these 2216's to work.

Thanks Matt

boy i'm always sticking my nose in here about these aluminum arrows.i own ever spine from 1512 to 2018s,and even when i shot 55/56# bows the 2018s were to stiff.those 2216s spine about 375 which should shoot great out of a 80/90# bow.a 2016-2014 cut 28 1/2 with 125 gr.tip should be closer to what you need, and if they are a tad weak drop down to a 100 gr.point to stiffen them up.good luck regards, robert
'TGMM FAMILY of THE BOW"at 211 degrees water is hot.at 212 it boils and cause's steam, which can run a locomotive.is it worth that one extra ounce of effort to finish first, the difference between good and great?
