"SKINNED" up my ACS......PICS
«
on:

After doing lots of reading here on Tradgang, I made the plunge and added snake skins to my beloved ACS. While it was undergoing the process, I took my riser to the local bow shop (who also does trophies) and had the deer head laser etched into the riser.
Turned out pretty well. I put Tru-Oil over the skins then misted one coat of satin spar urathane over that to cut down the shine. They are still shinier than I would like....any suggestions??

Don't think I'll shoot with ya'll at STAR, bad enough seeing you whip up with that widow but now an ACS-scary bloody thought.
Good job and looks fine. Hope to see you and the gang in Roanoke.

Looks good Allen....gotta love them skins. I recently sent an HSS back to Jack Harrison to have skinned.
I normally give mine a coat or 2 of Tru-Oil every year, then lightly buff out with a Scotch Brite pad to knock the shine off.

0000 Steel wool rubbed lightly on the limbs will also dull the shine. Good job on the skins. I have an ACS coming that looks very similar to yours, except the rest is on the other side.

Thanks guys, I'm really liking it!
JoeV, I think the guys at A&H will send limbs off to have skins put on if you want them to.
It's really not hard to do yourself, if you are so inclined.....heck even I managed to do it without a total mess up!! LOL
I was thinking about engraving a snake in the riser, but the bow shop guy didn't have one in his computer program for the engraver. I think the deer does add a nice little touch....something to set it apart from all the others.

Hey Allen that's looks great, you really got some kahoones to try that on an ACS. I would have tried a baseball bat first. Nice job.

Thanks again everyone.
Maxwell, I figured if I screwed it up I could just buy a can of Krylon and go back to the original look without any problem.
I had done another bow many years ago, but didn't have near the knowledge of what to do as I did this time....aah the wonders of the internet.

What type of wood is the laser etching done on and was it before a coat of finish ?

Those look awesome!!! I've got a couple of sets of limbs and have been thinking about skinning one of them. Do you know who A&H sends their limbs to? I had been thinking about sending them to Bob Morrison, but didn't know if he would do them.

Yep, I had just talked to someone at A&H the other day and mentioned my skin job. He said that they send theirs to Mr. Morrison when a customer requests skins.
The riser wood is Bubinga, and the etching was done after the riser was finished. I just applied a few coats of Tru-oil to the etching, should be good as new!

Allen which glue did you use to hold the skins down? I have read a couple different methods, from TB-III to Barge cement. Did you scuff up the limbs with sandpaper before applying the skins?

Chris, yes I roughed up the limbs with 60 grit sandpaper, glued the skins with TB III, then sealed with Tru-Oil.
Here's the "how to" that I followed. Pretty simple, however I didn't use the CA glue to seal the skins.
