anyone shoot Zwickey new bheads?
« on: May 24, 2009, 11:41:00 PM »
Hi everyone -- am interested in trying the new Zwickey No Mercy 170 gr screw in 2 blade with the RW single bevel.  Seen them in the 3Rivers Archery catalog. Shooting 51# recurve with 30" Axis 500 carbons with 100 gr brass inserts and 145 4 blade Magnus.  Just like the single bevel concept and heavier screw-in bhead. Has ayone tried these bheads? Tips on sharpening?

OR should a person use the 170 gr screw in 4 blade Delta?

Wish Magnus offered more screw in bhead options - not a talented fellow when it comes to glueing heads on inserts.

According to Dr. Ashby when the No Mercy came out, they failed to increase thickness/hardness of the steel, still down in the high 40s Rockwell, which rather defeats the whole purpose of going to single-bevel, etc. -- being tough enough to bust through bone without bending or breaking and still penetrate deep enough to get the job done even on worst-scenario shoulder blade hits. Unless Zwickey has subsequently increased the blade thickness and/or hardness (as other manufacturers have done on Ashby's advice) I'd look elsewhere if you plan to use this setup on really big game like elk or moose, or even those monster whitetails you have up there. I've been buying and testing every Ashby-modified head that comes along, and at this time, for my money I'd go with the Tusker Concord as the overall best bang for your bucks, and the Abowyer Brown Bear among the super-heavyweights (not as sturdy as the ABS Ashby, which is top of the line in quality and features, but a lot cheaper). One tuned-in shooter's opinion. dave

No Mercy let the air out of two whitetails for me last season. I put a great edge on the heads with a hand file. I used the LW single bevel and mounted them on cedar shafts. I would not hesitate to use the heads again.

Buddy of mine that came to Africa with me Took the Zwickey no mercy double bevel and killed everything from baboon to eland with them, nice head.
but like Dave said dont really have the thickness and hardness to really befit the single bevel.

still more than enough head to kill most big game here in the states

According to Dr. McGoo the no mercy head is the best on the planet for anything from baboon to slicing your bread! Great head!

I seem to remember Denny Sturgis killing at least one, possibly two, water buffalo with them. That being the case, they're probably up to the task of killing anything roaming the lower 48.   ;)

Yeah Jason...I'm pretty sure Denny killed both those huge aussie buffs with them.  Nothing in N America with ribs like those buffs.

That was a cool video as well.  So, if you want your question really asked by someone that has actually experienced this very head...ask Denny or buy the 'Point Blank Buffalo' DVD and see for yourself.

I shot two water buffalo bulls with the prototypes and two with the finished No Mercy heads. They were double bevel only at the time.

Shot this hog and a few whitetails with them also.

This is the only single bevel Zwickey kill I have and it worked fine.

Several years ago I was hired to shoot some high speed footage of arrows stricking concrete blocks and figured I might as well test out the Zwickeys also. I shot 1 Zwickey No Mercy into a concrete block 8 times with my 90 pound bow untill it failed. They might not be the toughest head on the market, but they have always done the job for me.

I like the No Mercy heads and haven't had any trouble getting a good edge on the single bevels, but I've come to the conclusion the best No Mercy is probably the double bevel due to the way the head is laminated.

There's a new 4 blade No Mercy now, I can't wait to get those in the door.  Pretty much the 4 blade STOS everyone has been longing for, except green!  :D

I've always found Zwickeys to be very tough and to take and hold a good edge.

I tried em last year and though I didn't draw blook they seemed like a pretty good head, flew great for me, and they held up to the beating I gave em. My only problem was getting a good edge on them but I'm mot pro with the file yet.

I opted to hunt with my snuffers though bc I got a better edge on em.

Sent you an e-mail Tim. Let's just leave the order as is. Just a little tongue in cheek joke that everytime I place an order a new post pops up relating to it. Guys if you need great service Tim is your man!
